Since my tennis elbow is keeping me off my bikes, I have decided to get a little more serious about hiking. I am picking up a north face Crestone 60 pack in the next 2 weeks, but I decided that instead of a tent I would like to go with a covered hammock. Has any one ever used this Rothco Jungle Hammock? My thoughts are that it will take up less room then a tent and be lighter, but I can only find a a couple of reviews on it and they are split down the middle with 50% saying its great and 50% saying its crap. My other option for going tentless is a tarp mosquito net and open hammock. I like sleeping in a hammock and I like the idea of having no tent. I am open to other suggestions too.

I have read and heard on many occasions that covered hammocks with mesh sides tend to pool water ONTO you in the rain, just by the water following the ropes. I don't know about this exact model, mind you, perhaps they have solved this issue.

All you have to do is tie some strings onto the ends of the hammock so the water runs down the strings not down the lines to your hammock. I have a hammock with a mesh net and enjoy sleeping in it. But if you are tall like me you have to sleep at a diagonal.

Cotton canvas are not two words you want to hear if your going for light weight. You can get the hammock bliss with the integrated net for $65, then get a urethane (not silicone) coated tarp for $30 and you should have a decent setup for $100. If you need to go cheaper than that, I would just go with a low end tent plus a big bottle of seam seal.

They sell hammock mosquito net cocoons.

Or you can make your own...

I have looked at both the Hennessy and the Clark hammocks since the original posts, but not the Hammock Bliss. The Clark set up is out of my price range right now, and the Hennessy is at the upper limit.
I have already pushed up my limit on the pack by $70, I went into the store looking at the Terra 65, but the Crestone 60 fit me much better. My reasons behind looking at closed in hammocks over light weight tents, is that the hammock systems are usually lighter at the same price point and the simplicity of set up and take down, or at least they seem simple to set up and take down.
I am not tall by any means, all of 5'8", but since I have been off the bike (second season now) my weight has ballooned up from 160# to 195#. All of the info I have read on the enclosed hammock systems say I will be within the specs.
Well off to check out the Blis Hammocks, thanks for the info.

Don't get it. I've had one as a kid and it is NOT packable. If you like that style, think about Lawson's hammocks

Well I just found out that the Hennessy is available at MEC here so I think that is the way I will go. MEC is only about a 30 min walk from here so I think I know what I am doing today, maybe I will get lucky and they will have one set up that I can get a good look at. Thanks for all the help.

Joezilla, the Lawson is nice and very versatile, but it looks a little bulky when packed up because of the supports needed. I have a number of tents, ranging from a little bivy up to a 6 man and the problem with each of them is the poles make them bulky even if the over all package is light. Mind you if I didn't have the other tents the Lawson would jump to the top of the list.
