Still looking for my nephew...the Byrds seem a little long for him but..440C steel and 20 dollars is....well, it's 440C steel and 20 dollars...

Quality knife?

The Meadowlark is a favorite EDC of mine. Personally I love it. Sure, out of the box it wasn't as sharp as the usual Spydie, but 5 min on the Sharpmaker fixed that. And there were a couple of light scratches on the sides (right were the cut out for the release is) of the lockbar and the face of the lockbar was finished pretty roughly. All only noticable upon closer inspection. No bladeplay, rock solid lockup. Initially I saw a little bit of chipping on the blade (nothing you couldn't fix with a sharpmaker), but after a thorough resharpening that problem as not reappeared. I absolutely love the way it handles and feels. Fits my hand perfectly, for $20 an absolute steal, even for twice the price I would still call it a bargain. Just my $0.02 though.

I have a Cara Cara and a BY01 BMP. They are both strong, sharp, and comfortable to use. Both have minor cosmetic defects: the Cara Cara's blade just barely bends to the left, but not enough to affect anything, and the BY01 has a paper thin gap along the backspring. For $20.00, who cares? I love both knives and will probably buy others.

The Cara Cara is essentially a less expensive Endura, and the BY01 is a less expensive Persian. I imagine the other models are similar parallels to Spyderco's regular models.

Hi Artful
I've got a Cara Cara. Fit & finish is excellent - tight lockup and no blade play.
Like HoB I found the sharpness out of the box wasn't quite up to Spydie standards but that was easily fixed. It's not seen much use yet but so far I'm very happy with it. For the price the Byrds are hard to beat.

Thanks guys, I think he might be ending up with a Byrd. I personally like the aesthetics of Byrd more than the low end spydercos, even.

I bought a Meadowlark when it was first released. It has decent edge holding and sharpens easily. Definitely a best value at under $20.
