Found a set at a junk store and wondered if anyone used these for their knives or axes or maybe even machetes. It was cheap enough but don't want to ruin any steel. Good or bad idea? Regards.

Try tinkering and maintenance. They are well thought of by those who have tried them there. An axe may be tricky, but Bill Moran ground the Moran edge with wheels for a long time. On knives and machetes, I dont see why they wouldnt work great. Practice is important, as you can probably mess up a blade pretty quick if you dont pay attention.

you can sharpen an axe or hatchet using both wheels if you like a v edge. if you like a convex edge, you can work up a burr on a belt sander or by hand and use the paper buffing wheel to remove the burr and polish the edge. the paper buffing wheel takes the place of a leather strop and in my opinion does a better job.
loosearrow, here is a link to the thread i started on the wheels and a link to my tips page. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787

Paper wheels work real well. I started using them in the late 1980's. I now use the belt grinder because I've found it works better for me doing convex edges.

I've used hard felt wheels but not paper. Had a polishing setup for rebluing guns, and used it for shapening my tools as well. Did an excellent job at both.

I've heard that buffing wheels are one of the most dangerous things you can have in a shop. Apparently they like to throw knives across the room like a drunk ninja.

Thanks for all the replies. There was no manual for them since they were from a junk shop. Something else to play with. At least I can sharpen the boxes of carbon kitchen knives that I pick up. Maybe I'll start to regrind them into other shapes and sharpen them up quickly. Regards.

if you read both threads i posted links to you'll be fine using the paper wheels. there are no manuals that come with the wheels. always remember to never go into any cloth or paper wheel edge first.

Thanks for the links Richard. I read all 25 pages. Lots of information there. Lots of effort on your part with all of those posting. Now to get busy. Most of the information repeats itself so I'm sure is have retained it. It seems like you use one older motor at 1725 rpm. Having 2 wheels may get in the way of the work, removing a wheel off and on may cause wobble. Do you have a dedicated motor per wheel? Regards, Loosearrow

i only use my wheels on a 1725 rpm single shaft motor and i dont have problesms with wobble when switching wheels. i have 2 motors that i use for my wheels, one i carry in my truck but is on loan to a friend here in ohio who makes some sweet folders. i also have some vids showing how i use the wheels (and myths about the wheels) posted on my websites.
