in my hometown city, its legal to carry pocket knives with blades upto 4 inch long so i carry benchmade grip which is quite beefy for urban edc..but i have noticed lot of people find it too big for urban edc and they prefer a gentlemans knife like bm osborne 940..
so was wondering who else used bm grip as their urban edc knife?
fits very nicely into levis 511 pockets

Um, the blade length on the 940 is only .05" shorter than a full size griptilians blade. When in hand, that would be near imperceptible unless side by side. Even then it would be hard to tell, especially since the 940 blade looks Very long for the handle.

That being said, I Love the 940, and one of the only griptilians I would own would be a full size in M4.

As far as your carry, I am all for it. The Grip is a nice knife and it is Very capable. I would just suggest some aftermarket scales. Shaped micarta or G10 would slim it down slightly while changing the hand feel for the better. On top of that, you can dress it up slightly to allow it to feel more at home.

Best of luck, you have chosen a tried and true knife that will serve you well for a long time.

Yeah I do with the 551 in CPM-20CV, it's a favorite of mine.
It's a classy knife that I like to carry when I'm going to town or at a social event.
I like this knife, and it's really sharp out of the box, I almost lost 1/4 of the width of my pinkie because of me being an idiot while making a snack, lots of blood that day!
It's a greatly improved Griptilian dressed up for an urban environment. It fits better in a pant's pocket and the balance is better.
I still use the standard 551 as “rough tasks days” EDC. It's my favorite for gardening and pruning :)

I usually carry a mini grip or similar sized knife for most of my edc. I picked up a 551-1 and a 556-1 last month with the intentention of carrying the mini (556-1) the majority of the time, but once the full size grip hit my pocket, it has been all I have carried. The mini has been relegated to the drawer.

Maybe it's the deep carry clip, but the full size grip doesn't feel any bigger in my pocket. plus the handle fits my hand better. YMMV

Ill carry anything i feel like really. And my tastes are in the 3 to 4 inch blade so that usually goes under the radar especially in the small town i live in. heck i even carry my lionsteel sr1 in town and the worst ive ever gotten is a weird look as i reclipped it in my pocket

I carry a full size Griptilian as part of my EDC lineup.

My first Grip was purchased damaged and used for about $20 bucks. It was a full sized 551 in 154CM steel. I felt that it was way to big for an EDC and did not carry it much. It just took up to much pocket real estate. My main EDC knife was a US made Kershaw Zing but, at times, I found it to be a little smaller than I liked.

As time went on, I started searching for something between the Zing and the Grip. A Kershaw Echelon and a Benchmade Volli were both purchased as the perfect replacement for the 551 Grip. They both failed. Later, I tried a Benchmade 531 as a dress knife and figured it could work as my "between knife". Much to my surprise, it has replaced my cherished Zing when I am in dress clothes and I now normally reach for a full size Griptilian as my EDC away from the office.

I leave a BM 551 in my car console so that I will have a good, sturdy workhorse knife with me. And I live in and work in a city. So yes, it's an urban EDC knife whenever I leave the house. I don't carry it into my workplace during the week, but on weekends I sometimes clip it in my pocket if I'm not carrying something else.

551-1 in my pocket at the moment at work. A bit too big for my taste as a EDC, but the 3" (or slightly smaller) I also have in my EDC-rotation is on the small side. I would love to try a BM 943, but I'm really not found of aluminium grips, so it will have to wait until they make a 943-x with G10 or CF handles, and I have surplush cash for it...

I have carried one in the past when it was allowed where I lived. Worked well, if you want smaller or thinner, there are lots of options. I've been on a small knife kick of late, and I can't carry it without cause here, but it did just fine when I could carry it. Great for sandwiches, good length for that.

Minigrip 556-1 is what I carry 60% of the time. ZT0450G10TI 20% of the time. CRK Large 21 20% of the time. BM 940-2 that I want to get into rotation but grab the ZT instead. But I love the 940 ?????? Still adjusting to look of reverse tanto. When I get away from urban civilization and into the woods my choices change to a Case XX 640045 R and a Gerber multi tool and I'll add an ESEE 4 if I anticipate larger tasks.

Short answer is the only way you'll know if the Griptillian is right for you is to get one and give it a fair trial period. Even if you end up changing to something else you still have a great knife for other purposes. Not much to dislike about the griptillian.

The 940 I wouldn't consider a gentleman's knife. It can take lots of abuse and is more robust than the griptilian if you get the aluminum handle. I find the grips a bit fat in hand and the blade is to lightweight for the size knife. If you want a smaller knife then get one. But if its not illegal why change. Get a slipjoint like a cadet- no one really cares about SAK.

Handle thinness (.44") is where the 940 beats the Grip (.61") for pocket-carry friendliness, as well as handle height. The Grip is super comfortable to use, however, but I hardly ever carry one...and I have some VERY nice custom Griptilians. Heck, I'd rather carry my AFCK (.51" handle thickness) or my Subrosa (.41"), as far as BMs go.
