Anyone with ATS-34

I was using my large classic last night (making dinner)...and was wondering if anyone else till has the ATS-34 blade. I don't know much about the knife, just the fact that I bought it on e-bay about two years ago without papers. I'm pretty sure that it's ATS-34 because of the polished blade (compared to my small BG-42 with the tumbled finish). CR said the only way to find out what it was made of was to cut it in half and melt it. I think I'm going to pass on that. Anyway, was ATS-34 really that bad? I know that I will probably end up with the new steel....distant future....but will most people be able to tell the difference in steel performance?

One of my favorite carry pieces is an old style small Sebenza with an ATS-34 blade. Nice thin edge, it gets a lot of carry time and is holding up well. ATS-34 seems to be more prone to impurities but I have been lucky and never had a blade with any bad spots in it.

Put that old style ATS34 Sebenza up for sale and see how much difference the newer steel makes. You would have no trouble selling that one. A lot of people preferred the better finish of the older ones.

I really like this knife just for the fact that it does not have the clip or clip recess. Maybe in time, I will be able to get a newer one...until then, I'll just keep reading the posts on the newer steel.

thanks all

With a polished blade? That is ATS-34, a fine knife and a real keeper!

Any chance of a pic of this oldie and its clipless side?

stjames -- how about putting a history pic together of your Sebbies? You know... line them up from old to new.

I have an ATS-34 model, but now mine has the stonewash finish, which I really prefer.

One for JT. This is the back of a large "P" Sebenza.

Another quick shot, I'll try and do a better one after lunch.

I was lucky enough to use an ATS-34 large for a few months. The edge holding was very very good. I have not noticed my BG-42 model being any better.:)

stjames -- you just give and give until it hurts, don't you?:D Man...the hits never stop--I had a feeling you would come through on my request. Thanks... that's a pretty Sebenza quiver you got there.

Oh yeah -- you have to throw a Classic 2000 in there just to round out the history lesson.;)

I've had a sm. sebie since '95. ATS-34 Never any problems with the blade. Holds a good edge, and re-sharpens easily on my sharpmaker. In fact I often only need a quick strop and its back in business. How could ask for more.
