I've been feeling a bit dizzy and sick here and there and decided to have it checked out. Blood tests came back today with a "increased amount of liver enzyme". I don't feel drasticly sick and only get dizzy once and awhile (and I attribute alot of that to flourescent lights) but now I'm worried a bit. They call me tomorrow with an appointment for my ultrasound.

I don't drink much (1-4 drinks a month)
Dont take Tylenol much
May have taken medecine with a swig of beer once or twice

ANyone have any ideas, nutritional advice, anecdotes?

thanks,

I had this also when I had Hepititus..(spelled wrong) after I recovered I still felt terrible ( the weak kinda day after having the flu feeling) The Drs were unable to offer me much in terms of medication to help with the liver as most medicine is metabolized by the liver. Howver the health food store told me to take 800mgs a day of Milk Thistle extract. I figgured why not as I was staring a liver biopsy in the face. Two weeks later my liver functions returned to normal. The Dr. I used is now prescribing this health food and used me as a case example in a presentation he made to other GI Drs.

Try milk thistle extract. and also make sure you do not have Hepetitus...

Five years ago had some blood work done for some other problems I was having. When the doc got the report back he noticed the my enzyme level was high. He asked be about symptoms. I had none of the ones he talked about. I'm not a heavy drinker, smoker and I don't any kind of drugs. He tested me every 6 months for 2 years before he finally decided that it was normal for me. I was a little worried for 2 years over nothing. He did warn me not to become a heavy drinker because that would be like asking for liver problems.

Your doc may have to do more test to see if your level is naturaly high like mine.

Hope everything turns out well.

I'm not a doctor but sometimes this is caused by obesity, too, from what I was told by a gastroenterologist; the liver gets "fatty" and has to work overtime. Milk thistle has been recommended to me,as well as regular exercise(that may just to work off the excess fat) and I'd also bet your doc will get you a hepatitis test to put that out of consideration and then may recommend a Hep B vaccination if you haven't had it. My wife worked in health care and it was mandatory. Some meds will cause it to rise, but it sounds like your doc has already taken that into account. It may also be that it's just naturally higher--a good doc will check it over time to see if there's any change.

Dizziness can be caused by any number of things--in my case Allegra(generic is lorantidine) reduced some dizziness/sleepiness produced by allergies I hadn't even considered. Did he check your blood sugar as well? Why an ultrasound?(I've found out the hard way that most docs are happy to explain why they are doings omething, but you have to ask first  )

Good luck!

The ultrasound is to check for fattiness, cerosis, tumors etc in the liver and also the gallbladder (which can affect the liver).
I don't think I have any of the risk factors that may cause liver problems and was told that i'd probably notice if I had hepatitis.
I do hope it's just routine or normal.

I'm just about to try the milk thistle (I knew about it before now but didn't know anyone who actually had success with it) but there are warnings about not trying any herbal suppliment without consulting my doctor on the american liver foundation webpage.

It's good to see so many other people that have had similar problems that sound like they're doing fine. Especially when reading up on it brings up some real bad possibility.

Oh well,

Ok, Picked up some milk thistle (with tumeric and artichoke) and a box of yogi tea "detox". :)

::crosses fingers::

Here's hoping.

I just had the exact same thing happen to me last month. I was worried as hell about my ultra sound coming back. Turns out all I had to do was start drinking alot of water instead of soda pop and I lost 5 lbs.

My doc said I was good to go

I was worried because I was having pains "inside" my lower back area from time to time and feeling dizzy a couple or thee times a day.

So don't get too worked up about it. I'm sure you'll turn out to be o.k. :D

Wow, that sounds alot like how I feel. I think my poison may be iced coffee rather than soda but other than that...
Guess I should try to get myself back up to 2 liters or so of water a day.

Thanks for the uplifting words :)

Probably not critical; but, Allegra is Fexofenadine, Laratidine (sp?) is the similarly acting (non-drowsy antihistamine) Claritin.

Fatty infiltration
Glycogen storage disease
Hemochromatosis
Wilson’s disease
Hepatitis
Cirrhosis
Liver congestion
Budd-Chiari syndrome
Candidiasis

I participated in a paracentesis today (tapping of the abdomen for free fluid) of a person with chronic Hepatitis B. His face and eyes were yellow (jaundice). Not fun.

Good luck with your exam(s).

Yeah, that was the short list of what I found online. Still don't think I have Hep. anything. I'm thinking more and more it's the complete lack of proper hydration and some other toxins I've been exposed to...

At least I hope.

Alasome, thanks for the correction. My doc put me on Allegra for a short while and it worked very well for me--I felt great. I've been using the generic Lorantidine from WalMart and I am wondering if it's not working for me any more...then again, I may just have a cold:)

Got the results of my ultrasound. I have an enlarged fatty liver and I get to wait a whole 2 weeks to see a gastro-whateverist.

Until then I plan on continuing my last 2 weeks of eating well, taking milk thistle and drinking plenty of water.

Still dizzy though.

Ok, since I've been told what I have I decided to troll around online and see if there is anything I can do about it.

I've found quite a bit of suggestions and have decided to toss a few of them out to see what you all think.

One site reccomends alpha-lipoic acid 100mg a day, protein shakes (whey not soy) with the amino acid glutamin, and milk thistle.
Another says that 5,000mg of vitamin c a day will fix me up and 50,000mg  will actually cause my liver to flush out fat and toxins and will fix hepatitis in 4 days. They also reccomend B12 and lecithin.

And last but not least is the site that reccomends I drink a spoonful of epsom salts in water then follow it later with 1/2 cup of olive oil and some amount of lemon juice that I forget. Supposedly all of that causes your liver to flush out all these litle green stones and cholesterol which you crap out violently.

The last one seems like snake oil to me but the other two sound reasonable enough...

I can't stop drinking because I dont, I'm not obese and I really don't fit in to many of the cause categories listed for my disorder.
I know we have people from all walks of life around here (doctors, herbalists etc) and I value your input.

Thanks everyone,
Neko2

Lose the coffee, drink more water, abandon the junk food forever, lower your carbs, and take the vitamin/herb supplements. That's my advice.

I'm not a Doctor, and I don't play one on TV. But IMHO - Snake Oil? I'd say so:

The only part of that web site I'd take seriously is that it is not a substitute for advice by a health professional. Really, before you start quaffing powdered hummingbird penis shakes and giving yourself coffee enemas, please talk to the Gastro-whateverist. You can always ask him / her about homeopathic medicine and herbal supplements.

and it's come back negative. If you are under a physician's care and you have taken milk thistle while he diagnosing you, God help you. You should not take anything until the diagnosis has run its course. If you get a false negative (test says it's ok but you really have the disease), it could be the result of home treatment. Home treatment has its place. But not when a physician is checking you out. You said you have a fatty liver. So the diagnostic part of this is over? Were you taking milk thistle when the doctor did the diagnosis? If so, let him know. He should know the false negative rate for Hepatitis A and mono in general. Hopefully he will understand milk thistle.

Good luck, Neko. Has anyone mentioned NAC to you? It is a supplement, but I think it's for people who need to take acetominophen combined with compromised liver function.
