Anything taking the place of the 701 Profiles?

I just learned about a month ago that Spyderco is definitely discontinuing the 701 Profile sharpening kit :( I was very sorry to hear that. I have 3 sets of the 701 Profiles and I use my main set a lot for Spyderedges and recurves especially. Those 701 stones are so versatile that you can just about sharpen anything with them. I truly hope that there is a new sharpening tool coming down the pipeline to take the place of the 701 Profile kit.

I've just recently gotten the Duckfoot and the Goldenstone sharpeners both and I'm very happy with both units. I just can't figure why the 701 is being eliminated  But I just get the feeling that maybe a new tool must be coming out to take it's place. Spyderco puts just as much quality in their sharpening tools as they do their knives.

I hope something else is in the works. I owned one set of the 701's and when I read that they would be discontinued, I ordered two more sets. One for home, one in my car, one unopened.

Yeah I might even get me one more set myself>> The 701 Profiles are such a versatile tool and I found them to be superb working in a machine tool shop>> they are great for "deburring" and just about any general filing job where a standard metal file is just not going to work right.

I suspect that maybe manufacturing costs may have driven them to make this decision :( But for sharpening Spyderedges and other good serration patterns they are indispensable. So I do hope that they have something new coming down the pipeline or maybe they have something even better. So far I like what I can do with that Goldenstone.

The old Galley V sharpening system that they disco'd about 10 years ago was a really neat unit to work with as well. Most people overlook the fact that Spyderco's sharpening tools are just as excellent as their knives. The 701 Profiles do such a great job sharpening serrations I'm just hoping that they don't forget that.

Hi JD,

The pro-files were created because the technology wasn't there at the time to create the current Golden Stone.

Thanks for the clearification Mr. Glesser :) By the way do you have any printed information maybe on tips or the general usage of the Goldenstone? I just recently finally got both the Goldenstone and the Duckfoot and I would personally be willing to pay for any information on the unit. I think I will also E-mail the company tomorrow (Monday 20th).. I thought that might have been the case for discontinuing the 701 stones. I still like the portable aspects of the 701 Profiles so I will be using mine for some time to come. I am enjoying experimenting with my Goldenstone and Duckfoot unit both. I did get the video/DVD that came with the Duckfoot but I get the feeling that there are some differences between the 2 units. >> Again thanks for the information and thank you all at Spyderco for making these excellent sharpening tools available to us :)

Hi JD,

I'm supposed to make a video for the Golden stone. I've been working on some fixtuers to add options for 30 degrees and 12 degrees with the unit. Just running behind on stuff at this time.

I'll keep an eye and ear out for both. And like I said I'm enjoying experimenting with both the Duckfoot and Goldenstone. I've got a feeling that many guys/gals will discover many uses for both units. Like I've said before I have just about every sharpening tool Spyderco has ever made and I've found multiple uses for all of them. I may be starting a thread soon on both forums to see what the users of both units have discovered by using them. Keep us posted as to when this video and the fixtures/accessories for the Goldenstone will hit the market. JD

The Goldenstone is single "grit," yes?

Yep, single grit white (fine) ceramic unless they've changed in the last couple of years. A nice tool, works well in conjunction with the (now discontinued) Byrd Duckfoot, but pretty pricey. I bought mine as a factory second or I wouldn't have one, I'm just too cheap.

I do hope in the future that they do make a Goldenstone in "ultra-fine" as well as the "fine" variation that they have now. It truly is an interesting tool and I do hope that someone does a youtube video or a factory video on the many possible uses and for sharpening tips as well. The Duckfoot is also a very versatile and interesting tool and I wish I had been able to get one long ago. Sorry to see it discontinued as well as the 701 Profiles because in many ways the 701 Profiles are a machinist's and/or metalworker's dream tool. I use mine for many deburring jobs I run across. Yeah it's time for maybe a comprehensive video on the wide array of Spyderco's sharpening tools. JD
