Is there anything for a knife nut to see or do in Ellenville? Like a Schrade museum, tour of the old factory or tour of Canal Street Cutlery? I'd plan a day trip if there was something worthwhile to see or do.

Well,
There is the remains of the Schrade factory,
Canal Street isnt really set up for visitors yet but we all go in anyways.
I know LT had a display set up at a local store and was doing something with the local hardware store but there really isnt too much else in town. I was surprised it is as small as it is. Its about four blocks wide and maybe a mile across with Canal street being one of the main cross streets.
I'm sure a couple of the locals can add more.

Thanks Irv. You can just pop in at Canal Street and take a self guided tour? It's a short drive for me so I may make the trip.

I would not attempt a self guided tour in the shop. There are a lot of sharp things and spinning belts. Its quite crowded.
You wont find a sign (wasn't there last year) on the building. I had to ask at the hardware store (no Schrades) at the other end of Canal St where the building was.
I went up the inside stairs to the 2nd floor door and just stood there until one of the cutlers got Dave Swinden to give me a nickel tour. I was there about 15 mins as they were all busy doing what they are supposed to do.
I'll post picts of the plant tonight when I get home.

Based upon the last photo I saw of the closed Schrade plant, they could use someone with a weedwacker if you're looking for something to do while you're there.:D

The Imperial Schrade plant is just another abandoned industrial site today. Nothing to see (unless you bring the weedwhacker). You probably won't find CSC without help. It isn't hidden, just non-descript. And no, they really don't appreciate unannounced visitors. For hardcore knife knuts I can offer a few weak suggestions. None are overly good.

1) The public library has an attached local history museum that you may find interesting. One small section on Schrade.
2) The hardware store in the old plaza in Napanoch has an electic mix of cutlery. Everything from true mall ninja to true Schrades. And everything in between, including some barber items. He is a nice guy and I enjoy his store but he expects to be well compensated if you get my drift.
3) Since many knife people also are outdoors people I would highly recommend spending a half day or more up in Cragsmoor at Sam's Point. Great hiking.
4) Not sure if it is relevent but Ellenville is also a hang gliding and paragliding hotspot.
5) If you are into mysteries, I suggest trying to find the remains of the Napanoch knife company. Some say they know where it was/is, but I've never been able to confirm it.

Looking back at my list, it seems like a lot. It isn't. You are welcome to drop by but there isn't much anymore.

Thanks Eyegor. It would seem like there isn't much there to justify a trip. I may follow up with CSC to see if they would consider giving me a tour.
