anyway of knowing if a blade is plated?

just wondering if there is any way to know if a knife blade has been chrome plated? i seen a western 49 on e-bay that the plating was flaking off badly i was a little surprised to see that western plated their blades or was it done by the owner?

A little birchwood casey cold blue will tell you if it's plated. The steel won't change color if it's plated.
