AO Grit and Scotchbrite Hand Finish?

I've once heard of a smith say that if you belt finish a blade to around 220, then move to hand rubbing with a piece of scotchbrite and a slurry of mineral oil and 400 grit AO grit, it creates a real nice finish on the blade. Anyone do this or have pictures to share of the result?

Yes, a loose grit matte finish can be nice. Keep the slurry wet.

However, a matte finish won't hide anything - the base finish from the 220 grit (or wherever you stop) needs to be dead flat with no coarse scratches.
