Looking at puchasing Benchmade Torrent 890 (and a few other AO folders) and took note that the action is super-quick and the thumb stud release is sensitive.

Have you had an experience with an AO flipper/folder opening in your pocket? Which knife (brand & model)? What were you doing when it happened? Get hurt? What did you do with the "offending" knife: continue to use it as was, store it permanently, make mechanical modifications, return it to the manufacturer for refund or fix or sell it?

Looking to dispell or confirm the fears and myths!

Thanks Folks!

If you're wearing jeans an easy way around this is to clip your knife to the right side of your pocket (if you're right handed and it's tip down) or the left side of the pocket (if you're right handed and it's tip up)

Other way around for lefties.

I have never had an AO open in my pocket. Like said above, if you put it up against the seam of your pants then it really can't open. This is a good practice for all knives. Also, some AO knives have a lock. I have had one open when I dropped it! For this reason, when I go into situations that it would not be appropriate to have a big knife drop out of my pocket and fly open, I use the lock.

I've never had an assisted opening knife open by itself in my pocket.
I have had a particular flipper (partially) open in my pocket a few times...but I didn't have the knife clipped. I put it away for a while, then just started using the pocket clip when I began carrying it again.

I always carry my zt 0350 in my back right pocket so it does have the potential to open up. But it has only happened to me once and that was when I had it deassisted.

Had a Chive open up and poke me in my side. Never carried it again...

I find that a good flipper is just as good as an AO..

I've read more than a few reports of the occurrence though it has never happened to me since I only buy A/O's with a safety-switch (e.g. Gerber Propel, Benchmade 585 Mini Barrage).

Even with the spine against the seam of a pocket, I've read reports of users taking something else out of the pocket that levered the pivot away from the seam enough to allow the blade to swing open slightly and penetrate such that a protruding tip sliced their hand. This has to be a rare occurrence but can occur nonetheless. A/O's need a strong detent or a safety-switch. My $0.02

I've had the chive and the leek open in my pocket. I don't carry them anymore. Luckily neither cut me when this happened. I haven't bought another AO since. If Maine passes the repeal on the ban on autos, I'd like to try one of the new launches. I don't know if i would carry it in my pocket though.

I had one open on me in my pocket. It was a Kershaw Turbulence(still carry the thing, just keep it in a different pocket now), and, stupidly I might add, I tried to close the thing while it was still in my pocket and ended up skinning the inside of the last knuckle of my right index finger. The blade was sharp enough that I didn't even realize what happened until I got my hand out of the pocket and realized it was bleeding pretty good. Now instead of in the regular front pocket I tuck it into that smaller pocket which doesn't allow it the room to even begin opening.
