AO question for Chuck Buck or Joe Houser ?

Interesting debate...I'm not into AO's [coff, coff], could you post a pic or link to the two AO's in question??? Ken Onion's and the Buck that Chuck Buck is referring to??? :)

(I added my $.02 to the discussion...DarrylS must be getting rich on all these pennies...) :D

All the Buck AOs have a paper insert in the box that gives a history of the AO system. It states that the concept goes back to the 1800s....seems Ken does not see it that way.....

That would be an interesting read. Post it

OK Ken, I will post the two sentences from the insert entitled "Buck One-hand assisted-opening knife". In the middle the question is posed "What is an assisted Opening Knife"...The last two sentences state " The design of an "assisted opening" knife differentiates it from an automatic or switchblade type knife. The concept of an "assisted-opening" knife is not new and dates back to the 1800s."

I have over 50 of the Kershaw knives designed by you, and several Bucks. So...What is the story behind them? Thanks Tom

LOL.....I hope there is not a fight over this topic !!! I made a comment in the post from the general knife forum about what I read in the insert you get with a Buck AO.....I love the Bucks and the Kershaws ( most of which Ken designed).....

hi Tom!
welcome to the buck forum..
naw a little nip here and there but not a lot of fighting and biting,,,
at least i have quit biteing!
yes i also would like to see the insert posted..
i dont have any AO knives, only 110's but i like most knives
and some thing diff i want to see and will make a point to check it out..
and Ken stop in more often !
this differing thought process is one i will follow..

hi Tom!
welcome to the buck forum...

Well, better late than never...

I'm not all that good at chasing down patents; but I can chase them down if I know the patent number -

US Patent Search

And while knowing Ken's patent date isn't a very definitive answer to who was first (it only tells who patented it first), it would be interesting to compare the Buck timeline to Ken's...:thumbup:

Note: A Search of patents awarded to Ken Onion or Kenneth Onion showed 0 results... :(

(BTW 334dave: What did you tell David VP @ Buck about the tar & feather party??? Did you tell him you were with us or not???) :D:p;)

hee hee Trax... he asked me !
seems he must read here once in a while!
he had a big smile and grin on his face
as things were talked and stammered of!
i truly do not recall what i said!
i was so shocked he even knew and remembered..
let alone that he said some thing to me of it!!!!
he giggled at my loss for words!
yep it happens some times- rarely but it does happen!
and YES he really really did did say to me next :
"you only collect 110's right?"
and as i pick my jaw up from the floor:
"yes sir,.. how did you know that?"
"come on back here with me, i got some thing to show you "
humm, yes i did get some thing from him...
will have to take picture some time ... :D:p

Must not be looking in the right places . There are dozens.

thanks BCCL!
now i see were or why Buck says it dates back to the 1800's ...
Ken references other patent numbers and a quick glance shows one as dated that far back..
so a quick look can be misleading and could be what happened with the advertising man..

Knives using a wide variety of means to assist and make them easier and faster to open have been around for a very long time. The US patent data base includes more than a half dozen patents, prior to 1900 identifying or utilizing some sort of mechanism or part to help with opening the blade(s).

The features range from a spring that completely opens the blade to a lever that “flips” open the blade. Some of the products would likely today be classified as “automatics” or “gravity knives” under the definitions of some jurisdictions. But many of them explain the purpose as to make the opening of the knife easier thus “not breaking finger nails” or allowing for the ability to use only one hand to use the knife.

One of the models actually uses a small lever that pushes against the blade until the back spring (standard pocket knife spring) takes over and opens the blade 90 degrees then allowing easier movement into the fully open and use position.

The items described above are only those that have had US patents issued on them, it would be difficult to guess at the number of ideas and gadgets people have come up with (since the inception of folding knives) and never patented or tried to patent, to assist and make easier the opening and use of folding knives.

We were trying to introduce a "hi tech" opening mechanism to a conservative audience and wanted to assure them this was something that had been proven over time.
