AO vs AUTO

Ok, I started wondering recently, why are AO's legal, but not Autos? Let's compair the atributes. Both can be opened with one hand, and both open equaly quickly. With an AO you nudge the blade to open it, with an Auto you nudge the blade release. So what? What difference does it make if the blade is opened by a mechanism of some sort? The basic action required to open the blade is the same on both, and the end result is the same on both. So why is one legal, and the other is not? What is the justification behind this? What is it that makes an Auto something that should be illegal? Perhaps I am expecting too much by looking for a logical explanation for the actions of law makers. Any thoughts?

The difference is with an AO it still requires you to push the blade out manually a certain distance before it automatically takes over and springs out. Auto's can open and close at the push of a switch. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Autos were banned starting in the late 1950s due to their relationship to gangs at that time. The laws that were written used wording to describe the types of knives that existed at that time. Therefore they stated " a button or lever in the handle of the knife" needed to be press to "automatically" open the knife. Switchblades had a dramatic come back in the late 80s till early 90s, and the US makers ( starting with Benchmade and their sterile autos) realized the dollars to be made here. Soon someone ( Ken Onion and Kershaw) realized that if you play with the wording of the law, you could make a switchblade that by some small ways was not legally a switchblade, and therefore sell it to a demanding public. Same thing as we saw with the now old assault weapons laws when the guns companies got rid of pistol grips and flash suppressors so the same semi autos could still be legally sold.

My point is they act as switchblades because they basically are, but they cleverly are made so as to go around a useless old law......

The way I see it, the reason is that the laws are made by disingenuous idiot liars. They have not a shred of caring that the laws they make actually effectively address a real issue. They simply want to look like they get things done so that people will re-elect them and they can continue to enjoy their power, and the money that they inevitably get as a result of having that power, and the luxury that the money buys for them.

How else to explain nonsensical laws that anyone with a brain can see are illogical?

Autos were banned in certain places due to hysteria and idiocy, mostly form the depiction of switchblades used by thugs and gangs in movies. There is no rational reason for it, just stupid legislation from worthless politicians trying to pretend they are doing something. The fact that all these meaningless laws have not been overturned shows the persistence of these sheeple-driven stereotypes.
