AOL ftp issue (help, please)

Greetings.
Cougar Allen sent me. The recent exchange:
"Hello, C.A.
Lately images from my AOL ftp appear as corrupted in my posts.
BRL recently suggested that the problem is with some sort of AOL coding.
I just checked with AOL, and they say, "Nonsense."
Might there be other, resolvable, causes?"

Cougar responded:
"I've heard of that ... I have some vague idea AOL compresses images and that can screw them up. Post in the Gadgets & Gear forum (in the Community section) and somebody who
knows more about AOL than I do will help you."

Please note that the corrupting of my jpg images has not always been the case, just in the last few months.

Any advice?
Thanks,
Joe

I don't use AOL, but a friend of mine once did and when he would email more than one JPEG, the AOL software would compress all of the JPEGs into one zip archive. The same when he received email with multiple JPEGs as attachments, they'd get converted into a zip archive.

He also used their FTP server, and I don't think he ever saw that on the FTP server though.

If you can get one of the corrupted pictures and post it here, one of us could examine it and determine what it is...

Thanks for the response. Does this come to you with bottom 2/3rds of the picture greyed out? That is what I am seeing before I now hit "submit reply."

I just checked on my own post above.
I looked at 5-6 seconds of completely blank space where the picture was to be. Then it suddenly popped on, in full.
Strange. But now I think I'm not in as much as a dilemma as I orignally thought, yes?

you might have a problem with your browser
im seeing the full image

It looks fine to me too. Maybe you don't have any problem posting images, only in viewing images. What browser are you using? Have you updated it lately?

Looks good here.

Likely the problem is a corrupted image in your browser's cache.

To fix that, empty the cache, then restart the browser.

I see normal image. I use Firefox 2.0

However, url of the image is http://members.aol.com/josephloya/brasses

(missing file extension, also I think the file has wrong header (not interpreted as image type))

I don't have experience with AOL, but try different image editor and add proper extension to your uploaded files and it should be OK

(btw I assume (according to exif) that you scanned the image, or more specifically you used (proprietary) software coming with scanner - try to use some image editor (e.g. Irfanview) to re-save the file created by scanner and upload it in same way as before to AOL (to find out if AOL is responsible for corrupting the file header or not :))

Thanks for your expertise and patience, all, while I work out my issue.

Cougar, please check you PMs.

Joe

This was it.
I have both IE and AOL. Emptying the AOL cache is but a click. Viewing issue solved.
Again, thanks all.
