Apache making a loud clicking sound as the knife opens...

My wife recently bought an Emerson Apache for me as a gift. I'm having an issue with the knife making a loud clicking sound as the knife opens. I suspect the liner lock or a detent may be an issue. This knife is considerably more tight than my CQC-7. I called Emerson; the representative suggested I send the knife back for warranty repair. Open to suggestions... Hoping I've overlooked a simple fix. I must mention the Mrs. is not happy that I will not carry the knife she bought me.

Biggest flag for me would be breaking in; your Apache just needs time to adjust itself while it settles. The detent might be the culprit, but I can't see how the liner making that loud of a noise when it engages. Maybe you can make a short video for us to see? It would help us pinpoint the problem much faster.

A video would be helpful as ^^^^^ stated. Possibly try loosening the pivot just a tad as well?

Here is a short video... Thanks for looking.

The click is supposed to be there on the Apache as well as the Appalachian. If you open her up, there should be a larger detent hole that causes the detent ball to catch and clink. It's a new thing from EKI that helps the blade rocket out. I have dubbed it the Rotchet detent. I believe the KACK was equipped with it as well.

Thank your wife for the gift...by showing her you appreciate it. (Meaning: put it in your pocket, and use it.)

Does the sound or action affect the folder? Is the blade centered? Is the action smooth or normal?

I would use it and use it. That click sounds like the detent. Mine sounded like that until I carried it for a month. So did my Combat Folder.

This is correct. Same thread in GKD has these same answers in it. It's normal. Most of us want our Emersons to sound and act like this one.

i don't remember mine being that loud/punchy sounding, i do remember it having some noise, but watching that video on my phone it sounds extremely loud. the actual sound part sounds right to me though.

First off, beautiful knife. As previously stated above, the biggest stand out seems to be the detent. I don't own the Apache (yet) but after doing some looking around and asking a friend who owns one, it does seem that the detent hole is a bit larger. Unless there's a major issue with operation, I don't see a need to do any adjusting.

Seems like the pivot is a bit snug and the detent is just a touch louder than a couple that I have handled. It's pretty close to the Appalachian I had when I first got it. The sound should decrease a little bit as the detent ball wears away the sharp edge on the blade's detent ball hole.

Wow, gotta say I would not be happy with it making that noise at all. If my KACK comes in like that I will be sending her back.

When in doubt sent it to Emerson for a check to see everything is working in specification. "A LOUD CLICK" is the sounds my Emerson makes when the blade locks up, but I wear noise amplification devices also know as (AKA) hearing aids.

Sounds like the detent ball sets really deep in the hole. If you really concerned about it you should send it back and let them inspect the knife, if it's normal let EKI tell you that then you should feel much more comfortable to carry it, imo. Congrats btw!

God. I love 'em, but...for the eleventieth time--why doesn't Emerson enclose a single sheet of paper with every knife outlining all the things veteran owners always have to explain to frustrated (not you, OP :)) first-time Emerson owners regarding a new knife: break-in, perceived pivot grittiness, and all of the other little NORMAL Emerson subtleties unique to their knives. I think these little quirks are what make the knives so attractive to many of us...

I swear I'm going to write it myself and keep it handy here so I can just block post all the new owners who come asking the usual break-in related questions, wondering if their new knives have a defect.

OP--I'll add here that they're all probably right when they tell you it's normal or that it will break in and be fine. Not uncommon for an Emerson at all.

EDIT: Oops--shoulda mentioned also that the best thing like that that I know of currently is probably Silvanus' excellent "Basic Owners Guide..." sticky which appears at the top of the Emerson opening page here. But it was written in '14....a few new models and designs since then. And there are a few points/tips that could be added....
