I'm really enjoying my DP Knives blade, thought I'd share a few pics here of my attempt to make an Apache throwing star.

I chose some green branches from a staghorn sumac clone. Maybe not the ideal material for this, but I like sumac and it smelled nice. I stripped some bark for use as lashing material.

Starting the lashing cuts. The sticks bled some white latex.

Fitting it together.

Not too pretty, but I think she'll fly.

Aaaaand...snapped on the first throw. But it did strike where I aimed it, and stuck solidly. The thin, green, sticks were too weak for this really. Still, it was a fun little 10-15 min project. Plus I got to use my DP Knife! Always a pleasure.

So I understand that this is a Native American throwing weapon for hunting small game? Great pictures, and I really like that knife. Too bad I can only afford Moras :D

Nice experiment, John.
I like using Maple and Ash for my stars as they can take a beating.
Very nice knife, thanks for the pics:)

Thanks. I've got some maple on hand, might give it a second try!

So is this what the Apaches used to change their spare tires?

Only on their Grand Cherokees.

Nice post. Sumac is fun to whittle because it is so soft, but I find it nearly worthless for everything other than whistles. The soft pith makes sumac nearly ideal for bush whistles!
