I got some woods time in last week before I was forced to bail because of Irene, and had a chance to whip up an Apache Throwing Star.

I've been wanting to do one ever since Pitdog posted his up several months ago. It was really quick and easy to make, and worked like a charm.

I took these pictures at home yesterday:

As you can see, at just over 22.5" per side, I made this on the large size . It was that heft that made this weapon work so well. Even after we threw it into the ground and other hard objects blunting the tips, it still penetrated deep. I used the BK-9 to rough it out and make the notches, and my Pit Mora to sharpen up the points- Hey if it wasn't for Pit I never would have known about this.

Because I was at family camp, I had access to full sized archery targets to test out the star. Here is a 16 year old family friend giving it a try:

It was pretty accurate, and a lot of fun to mess around with:

That's pretty BA, always meant to try that and now I will:D.
Btw, great use of the 9:thumbup:.

Hmm, you know how people say they wouldn't throw their only knife? Problem solved!

I wonder if you could just use one stick sharpened on both ends. It would be harder to stick. Also, I guess it would be just a rabbit stick with sharp ends. Speaking of which, does anyone sharpen their rabbit sticks?

I put points on the ends, but they aren't sharp... Not that I've ever thrown one at a rabbit. My real rabbit stick is a .22:)

This is pretty cool. I always love Native American weapons, and I think I'm going to try this when I get some time. Any special hints to suggest? It looks pretty self-explanatory.

Thanks. I think it's bad a$$ too! It definitely scared some of the other campers, especially when they saw how well it worked.

Make the notches tight and even out the weight. Also, I found it most comfortable to hold on the thickest prong, so I guess you could leave some extra material on one side has a handle.

Well, hard to believe that such a throning star really works... I think because of the the stability. Well, but it seems, it really works. Nice trying out!

Kind regards
