Looking to purchase an apex edge pro -
what do you recommend for a system kit?
is it worth my time to try an find a used one?
is it the best knife sharpening system for someone who wants sharp knifes but really don't know how to put a sharp edge on one or is there sometihing better out there?

Thanks for your time

Ron

The Apex is a great system, but no system will give you a super sharp edge if you don't know how to sharpen a knife. Learn that first. (Match the blade edge to the stone angle, raise a burr, properly remove the burr.)

The Edgepro is probably the best system out there, but it is a little expensive (worth the cost), takes a little longer to set up and is messier, doesn't work well with agressive recurves and can be difficult on thick sabre hollow grinds.

I purchased an APEX about 5 years ago and just think it's the best of the products out there. About 2 years ago, I upgraded to the PRO, though it certainly wasn't necessary. I gave the APEX to my oldest son.

I've used everything imaginable over the years and most gizmos just don't work all that well. I did buy the Murray Carter DVD on Freehand Sharpening and the requisite Japanese Waterstones. I became adept at that.

All in all, I feel that if I want to put the absolute best edge on a knife, the Edge Pro along with some polishing tapes that you adhere to the blanks is the best way to go.

As Twindog mentions above, you need to really understand the sharpening process to get the best results.

Good luck.

thanks - I think it apex will be my present to myself this season - is there a good book or video out there on the basics of knife sharpening
