First off, I am sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but I figured if anyone would know about the apex edge pro, it would be Busse owners!

I just ordered an apex edge pro 3 and I was wondering if anyone has used one and wondering if I made a wise investment

I thought that I have read of people using one in the Busse forum. Thanks guys (and gals).

Ankerson uses one with great results. I'm going to be trying my hand at v grind sharpening next knife I get, with a bunch of DMT diamond stones and i'm considering finishing up with the polishing tapes used on the edge pro, free hand.

It looks like pretty much the best sharpening system available, Ank gets some amazing edges with his. I just like the challenge of free handing.

Yes they work fantastic, practice on some cheap knives before you start on your INFI to get the process down.

Watch the video at least 3 times.

Take your time with it.

Good choice:thumbup: Anyone can achieve great results with an edgepro. That is the beauty in them. Then the guys that really know how to sharpen can squeeze the max potential out of the system.

I think you will like it:)

Plus if one knows how to free hand sharpen they can put that awesome 1,200 grit steel that comes with it to good use. ;)

It will bring the edge back to shaving sharpness in just a few strokes.

Ankerson, you've got some amazing results with yours. Now the edge you get with the polishing tapes, could that be sharper with stropping or do you think the final polishing tape is equal?

Also, as a judge of "ultimate" sharpness, can you split hair with an edge pro edge?

230 - I was able to split hair with an edgepro easily. No stropping. Just the polishing tapes. They work well.

With the very high polish I get with the 6 or 7000 grit tapes, that's 25,000 to 30,000 plus whetstone it cuts the hairs when I touch it. ;)

I could take it to a lower polish or just the 1000 grit stone and split hair.

But then my eyesight isn't all that great.

No real need to strop at high polish since that is the stropping.

Where do you get the 6 or 7 thousand grit tapes? I figure it could be a cheaper alternative to buying a ton of super high grit wetstones. Just buy the tapes/blank.

I don't see any of the 7k there.

Do they go higher than that? I'm curious to the level of sharpeness one can achieve. I've been considering going solely to v edges for my smaller knives.

I'd love to get one, I'm making a mess of my edges. I can get them sharp but not pretty !!

you know I was going to post that I wish I had gotten the pro model, but man that's a price hike. I'm positive that it's 100% worth the money if you have it to spend, I'm not just not sure I'll have that kind of money to spend on an upgrade any time soon... I basically have an apex 4 kit (with some extra stones) and a different set of rods, from hand american - the half glass smooth half ribbed rod, and their 600 grit ceramic.

you can get some pretty gnarly edges out of the basic apex model.

and another plus side, the stones make for an excellent variable grit filing system. not technically a file, but it uses the same basic hand motions. I suck at traditional hand sharpening but I'm really precise with a file. something about shoulder vs. hand mechanics. If you can rig up a belt sheath for them, they make for great field sharpeners.

(you'll note that I don't use metal wedges :P, I'm a traditionalist, and they are a giant pain to work around when re-hafting.)

Thanks everyone for the great info :D
You've all been great as always, knew I could get some good information here!

All I can say is thankfully I hadn't worked on the Edge on my NMFBM yet because if I had the little accident I had this morning would have been a lot worse. ;)

It would have been Hospital time for sure.

Be careful Ank:cool:

I lost my FBMLE once when chopping. I had just gotten it scary sharp too. Lesson - NO MINERAL OIL ON HANDLES. Might look pretty but it sure is not functional.
