watching the olympics last night and heard the commentator mention that the speedskater's gold glove tips were made by a SLC knife maker

any idea who made them?

pretty rare that knife makers get mentioned on a national broadcast as prominent as the olympic games
 
So I did hear correctly. I was wondering how that came about also.

That was a WILD finish to the 1500 meter event. Thought Apollo was gonna get gold, and he was VERY fortunate to get the silver. Exciting race!

The knife maker is Ricardo Velarde. He's also a speed skater and has made tips for all the members of the U.S. Speed skating team.

He did get a bronze but in that race he got the silver. Three Koreans were in the front and one took out two of them and Apollo went from 4th to 2nd.

The other American got the bronze and I forget his name.

Two events to go. The 500M should be EXCITING!


That IS cool about the gold glove tips.:D

Ricardo was an Olympic diver for Mexico!! He's one talented guy, makes the silver bells that falconers use, too.

Ohno is a doucher. He is hands-down THE most-hated American in Korea, ever since the last winter Olympics, and his related asshattery . I've enjoyed watching the Koreans wipe the floor with him so far. :thumbup:

Seems to me that a number of the Korean team were DSQed for playing dirty at these games.

AND your point is? "his related asshattery " all i've seen is YOURS!

If you watched closely, the Koreans would NOT have won a race yet without using dirty tactics. Considering Apollo is one against two or three, i'd say he's doing quite well.

I'm not going to hand out to many details about stuff because our family is the kind that doesn't like to much attention. My Dad, Ricardo Velarde, is the man who made the tips. My Dad and I also make Falconry bells. I'm the one who sparked the idea but my Dad is the one who brought it all together and perfected it all. When we speedskated together we were testing these tips and our coaches were people like Jordan Malone, Ryan bedford, Travis Jayner (i believe thats how you spell his last name) and we basically became good friends with most of the people on the team. Naturally they started wanting pairs. We also became good acquaintances with Apollo who wanted a pair but was always to lazy/ "Busy" to drive up. A lot of people think my Dad was working 24/7 to make the perfect tips and sell them for a price and so on... no. We were just having fun and came across them by, well basically accident. By the way, the tips aren't gold. They are a special kind of metal called beryllium. The closest thing to gold are the special kind of silver thats on a few of the team members hands.
