1. Stop along the trail. Find Staghorn Sumac. This time of the year before the heavy Autumn rains wash away the goodness is best IMHO. Use the red Staghorn Sumac berry clusters not other types aka poison sumac.

2. Get to camp are remove the red berry clusters from bag.

3. Soak in cool water as setting up camp. Do not use hot water.

4. Pour into another container using bandanna for filter out floaters.

5. Drink up. It was good!

A video of the process on the AT.

Thanks for watching.

I haven't made Staghorn Sumac tea in a long time. As I recall, I used hot water. Could have used some sugar if you know what I mean. May have to give it another try. Nice post by the way!!

Sumac is used as a food in the Middle East and I think there are commercally made drinks available . Here in the Catskill Mtns the tree is common.

nice! been meaning to try it after seeing one of your posts awhile back...it finally cooled down enough here that i think i'll hit the woods soon.

I've heard it's pretty good, but never tried it myself. Perhaps I will now!

I was in West Virginia last summer and I made this for some locals. They all thought I was crazy because they thought it was poison...lol. We mixed a bunch with Tito's vodka and it was great! The locals started calling it "Sumac Whack" There are two types I find, some with little hairs that need to be strained and some without the little hairs. Either way it's great!
