I just saw it Thursday. Is it just me, or was that a great movie stretched into a bad movie? A few scenes were great, but the big chunk of the movie was bad. Should I give it another chance?

Yes you should.. it was enjoyable..
What chunk did you find the worst?
I did have a few boring moments.. But the sheriff was cool... insane, but cool

I think there were too many boring spots, it seemed to have alot of empty time where they were trying to stretch it out to last for a full length movie...

I think it was a 'potentially' great movie that turned into a not so good/boring one. It's a pretty close adaptation of Robert Parker's book (he writes the Spenser and Jess Stone novels) and he's gotten fixated on women like that over the years. It gets old after a while, and I think bogs things down along with all the "we're tough" chat. If Ed Harris (who directed) had stayed with the pace the flick began with, it would have been something else. I'm sure there's a sequel in the hopper since there was another book with the same two characters. The gal isn't in that book, but the 'tough' chatter escalates.

That said, I'm such a nut for Westerns that I really enjoy nearly all of them and though I'd not see this one again, it was OK for what it was.

I was disappointed, especially after having seen all the praise for it. I thought Open Range was a much better film.

I thought it was the best western to come along in a while.
The majority of movies nowadays are 90 minute chase scenes and they aren't for me.
The only negative in appaloosa for me was the gal actress.
She wasn't believable at all.
Otherwise

Give it another try, just don't expect an action flick :D

I like Appaloosa a lot, reminds me of the old school John Wayne style movies with an actual story and not just shoot'em up.

+1 on Open Range, was a great movie. As for Appaloosa I liked it a lot, Jeremy Irons was a great villian, could have used a bit more naked Renee Zellweger though.

I believed the hype and liked the actors, but Apaloosa didn't do anything for me. I fell asleep and must have missed the most exciting part cause I sure didn't see it.

Is this a remake of Appaloosa starring Marlon Brando?
I thought that was a good movie.

I liked it. It was better than 310 to Yuma IMO. Not many high budget westerns made anymore, so I get excited when they make one. I also liked the Robert B Parker books it was based on. A new one is coming out next month, entitled Brimstone.

The book was alright, not terrific, but got me through a couple flights a few months back. I'll have to check out Open Range.

Is this based on Parker's book Resolution or is it a different book with the same characters?
