I didn't want to derail Philll's give away thread but I tried his magical Apple Vinegar treatment on my KLVUK today between other projects. I was shocked that my wife had any but she had a little bit left in a bottle which turned out to be plenty.
I did precisely as he suggested and soaked a paper towel and carefully wrapped it around the blade making sure I had full contact and coverage.
It was well soaked and I left it for about 1 1/2 hours, long as I could stand without taking a look. I was shocked that nearly all of the black scale came off in the first soak, probably 95% of it. I scrubbed it with dish soap and some scotchbrite pad, dried it well and soaked it again for 45 minutes or an hour.
Not sure if I need to soak more for more patina or if I'm there. I previously tried just a little sanding on the black scale and figured there was no way I'd ever sand that stuff off, it was tough. BUT no match for apple vinegar which I've never heard of before. Lesson for today I reckon.
Photo evidence.

I kind of liked the black fine but I'm kind of liking this look pretty good too.
I also learned that I absolutely hate the smell of vinegar, awful stuff. Wife says she uses it for cooking, must taste better than it smells for sure.
