Apple Vinegar?

I didn't want to derail Philll's give away thread but I tried his magical Apple Vinegar treatment on my KLVUK today between other projects. I was shocked that my wife had any but she had a little bit left in a bottle which turned out to be plenty.

I did precisely as he suggested and soaked a paper towel and carefully wrapped it around the blade making sure I had full contact and coverage.

It was well soaked and I left it for about 1 1/2 hours, long as I could stand without taking a look. I was shocked that nearly all of the black scale came off in the first soak, probably 95% of it. I scrubbed it with dish soap and some scotchbrite pad, dried it well and soaked it again for 45 minutes or an hour.
Not sure if I need to soak more for more patina or if I'm there. I previously tried just a little sanding on the black scale and figured there was no way I'd ever sand that stuff off, it was tough. BUT no match for apple vinegar which I've never heard of before. Lesson for today I reckon.

Photo evidence.

I kind of liked the black fine but I'm kind of liking this look pretty good too.
I also learned that I absolutely hate the smell of vinegar, awful stuff. Wife says she uses it for cooking, must taste better than it smells for sure.

Good job! Told ya it was simple.

I did a patina job on one of my traditional folders using hot boiling vinegar. Now THAT was stinky. That one got me banned from doing patinas in the house.

Looking mighty fine there, I actually like the forge scale, gonna leave mine on but I like how your came out, it nice to personalize your blades and make em yours.

I like to personalize some but others I don't want to mess with the original creators grand scheme of things. I thought long and hard about this KLVUK, as I mentioned, I loved the black scale left on to, guess it was a cold Saturday and I needed something to do or maybe I just wanted to play Billy Nye the science guy and experiment.

A genuine user knife i have no issue messing with. I'm sure the kami's assume all are users, obviously since they are so well built to use but to me many are art forms, and I can't get myself to chop nothing with them.

I soaked my KLVUK a couple more times in the apple vinegar today. It darkened it up a bit more and gave it more character similar to Philll's up for grabs version. Then I did some better sanding and refining on the handle. Pretty much lost all my red tint but it's baby backside smooth now and I like the look, so we'll call it good to go.

Nice work on the khuk.

Oh, and vinegar is awesome for cooking. And supposedly really good for you too. I know a guy who takes a shot of it mixed with honey every morning.

That came out pretty dang good lookin! The wood looks great! I sanded my little KLFVKK and noticed it was stained and it came out looking something like that. I like the contrasting grain! Very cool! nice job:thumbup:

Thats funny! My wife forces the stuff on me as well. She uses lemon and honey and by god it needs it. She uses it on the dogs, her hair, for cleaning (mixed with baking soda) the kitchen. She makes the stuff in a clay pot. Ill stick to beer making:D

Yeah I kind of walked into it when my wife said it works really well for cleaning windows. I screwed up and asked her how she knew that? Some folks are just over sensitive I guess.

I can hear that now! "What! You dont think them windows are clean! Then get your arse over there and clean them yourself!" Careful Bawanna! You and Slugger are going to be cleaning some windows instead of sharpening Khuks!

Speaking of Slugger he's been kind of quiet lately. Wonder if his wife put a gag order on him.

Mork calling Slugger, let us know your alive and your wife wears the pants in the family (if you can).

We need to chat anyhow.
