i have a fairbairn i bought at a auction back in 2000. and i was wondering what steel the blade is made of.. i did a search and found it comes in 154cm and 425 modified stainless steel..

how can i find what steel this one is made with?

The 425 is a low cost , low performance steel while the 154cm is one of the best knife steels .The originals of course were IIRC made from modified bayonets and certainly not stainless ! If you use it it should be fairly obvious which steel as the 154cm edge will last much longer .

from your post we need to know the maker isit original? most modern makers stamp what steel it is.

Whoa there! Obsidion.
Applegate Fairbairn Covert Double Bevel???
(Not quite a double bevel, I might add. As it had a false edge and about half the length at that).

Through your description, I take it - you mean that to be the Gerber medium-sized Applegate-Fairbairn (A-F) Covert folder? If so, the early batches were made of ATS34 steel, and later batches in 154CM.

The largest Gerber A-F folder was the "A-F Combat Folder", and that was made from a particular grade of 400 series stainless steel - most probably 425 modified as you had researchedl.

the blade is 11,2 cm, handle is 14,3cm.. sorry no inches on my "ruler"

well i startet to wonder what steel it was after i re sharpend it and it has hold a razor edge for 3 weeks with normal home use. i took off alot of metal in that resharpening..

the knife looks like crap as i used it to learn sharpening some years ago :( big mistake..

I have one of these and I did wonder what the blade steel was. It is good to know. I was impressed with the action, very smooth (at least mine is) but couldn't Gerber put a pocket clip on it that was removable for those that did not want it?? Oh! the mysteries of knife production...
WOOK

just got one the other day and mine is a Made in the USA version covert and on the other side is stamped 154CM.

since this post was made i got an emerson in cm154 and now it is very clear that the gerber aint..
