Is this knife, the applegate-fairbairn covert considered illegal or legal in New York City? The fale edge of the knife is not sharpened... But looks a bit dual edged.

I want to bring it to Europe where it is legal.. but will have to bring it on JFK airport in New york City (checked luggage of course). Do you think I can run into problems at the airport both arriving and departing?

The blade is less then 4".. I don't think tihs knife is considered a switchable?

Thanks.

It seems anything under 4" is fine.
It shall be unlawful for any person to carry on his or her person
or have in such person's possession, in any public place, street, or
park any knife which has a blade length of four inches or more.

And you are exempt if you.
(a) is being used for or transported immediately
to or from a place where it is used for hunting, fishing, camping,
hiking, picnicking or any employment, trade or occupation customarily
requiring the use of such knife

So I think that knife should be fine.

I haven't had a problem.
I was stopped by cops one night coming home with a friend from a christmas party a few years ago. We stopped in a gas station about 1AM, 2 blocks from my home. The attendant, in his little bullet proof booth, hit the panic button when we got out together -my friend was black, I was white. I guess the attendant just woke up and freaked out. The cops came out of nowhere, about 5 patrol cars, already responding to a grocery store robbery/shooting not far away and surrounded us.
We told them where we came from, just a few blocks from the robbery (not a good sign), and I had a few knives on me (also not good). When they saw I had a little 2" liner lock folder and a bunch of miniatures I was working on, they just laughed. After confirming where we came from, they let us go just as a shots fired call came in.

Anyway, if you're honest enough and the knives aren't above legal length they generally have no problems, unless you're waving it around. If it's above legal length, just keep it in your pocket.

The Applegate-Fairbairn could be construed as a dagger. Don't carry one in this particular Peoples' Republic. They're illegal along with every other knife that could save your life. No pepper spray or mace either.
