Just a quick note on learning for the first time why there is such a well-deserved Spyderco following. First, the company, then the poliwog.
I currently own 2 Benchmades (mini-presidio & 705) and 2 Spydercos (poliwog & starling). And heretofore, as a southpaw, I've appreciated the axis lock when my options were limited to right handed liner locks or frame locks (disclaimer, Chris Reeve makes left-handed versions of its frame lock knives, though not in the same variety available to right handers). Too often, lockbacks even if one hand opened, were two hand closed. And to this day, I will still take a lock back over a liner lock, company notwithstanding. I don't like liner locks and frame locks are limited for southpaws. That's the population and the market.
Nuff said. I like Spyderco. Period. I like Sal's availability on this forum, his openess to input for new knife designs, the transparency in conflict (e.g. the Spyderco hole and the Benchmade Vex), and the commitment to his customers. In short, before I didn't understand Spyderco loyalty, now I do. Thanks Sal.
The Poliwog is a great knife. Would it be better in G-10 or FRN? Maybe, but that's not an option right now. What I like is VG-10, the Spyderco hole and the ball lock in a package. Combined with the ergonomics in a handshake grip (is that a sabre grip? I'm sorry). It's a winner. I love the Poliwog. And I prefer, frankly, the ball lock to the axis, at least the ball lock on the Poliwog. And the Spyderco hole to the thumbstud. Would I like an ambidextorous Dragonfly or Kopa? Sure. But the numbers aren't there for buying. And I'm ok with that. Just give me some choices. Wish I was born right handed. I'm not. That's ok. There's a company and a knife. Can't ask for the world. Thanks Sal. Les, take note. Benchmite is a good knife, but not that good, esp for us lefty's.
