Ok - the "Apprentice Ducci" part may be a bit of an over statement (who could even begin such a journey) but here is my first attempt to personalize one of my knives.

This is a Busse Apprentice I got not too long ago. While a nice size, the handle was a blocky bit of micarta. It had square edges and was not all that comfortable in the hand - so I got a grinder tip for my hand drill and started at it. Trimmed her down a bit in the "neck" area and rounded some of the edges. Then sanded a bit and rubbed in some oil and presto - she feels (and I think) looks much better.

My Apprentice Mini Badger/Warden/Basic3 look alike!

it looks great! any before pics?

I thought about that after I started...... should have/could have/would have - but didn't....

But see how much better she looks now!! :D ;)

And for the record I did not take off any of the metal - if that helps understand what I did- Just curved out the micarta.

5160 is the steel, I am getting ready to handle mine in cocobolo. I hope you had a mask on, micarta and G10 shavings are like a claymore going off in your lungs.

Look'n good, you are on your way..........

I have to say, well done. Looks more ergonomic now. Planning on using it?

Thanks everyone

cjpgeyer might you have any earlier photos?

And what is this micarta lung thing? I have heard about it before and I held my breath when I was grinding. The had a t shirt to wipe it down when I was checking on the progress - what is bad about micarta?

And oh yes - I am going to use her - that I why I made her fit my had better! :D

I currently have a dam^ing mantra...Sorry, no pics...sorry, no pics....

It's great to hear you'll use it. I had almost forgotten about it in my pile o' knives. I just dug up a Brock I forgot about, too. I think it's called Baby Beast.
Can't wait to see some 'in use' pics!

Micarta, like other phenolic resin-based products, can do wicked things to the lining of your lungs. In many ways, it behaves just like asbestos dust. Google "Mesothilioma" and prepare to shudder. One of the great motorcycle designers of our time (John Britten) was taken from us early because he tended to grind carbon fiber without a mask.
