Rather than resurrect an old thread, I thought I'd ask here. How can I tell whether an old apprentice knife is is A2 or INFI? If memory serves... and it doesn't always, I was told 1/4" A2. It has the older smoth coating, but looks almost "bumpy" underneath it.

Since threads are worthless without pics... here is a newer one. :D

Maybe just an excuse to post a pic again...;)

As far as I know Apprentices were not using Infi....but then again I know I don't know Jack.

A friend had some yellow and black micarta, and I got an expert to do the handles for me...

I've heard of 5160, D2 and A2 being used for apprentice blades. I'm not so sure about INFI, but I suppose it could have been used on a final test blade.

You could get a bluing pen and see if it takes; no blue equals INFI. The ground away bump (talon hole area) makes me wonder if this was a INFI blank. They would have had to grind off the bump to get rid of the talon hole. The D2 & 5160 blanks that I've seen have the bump without the talon hole.

Either way, its lookin'!

I believe Mulder was going to use a bluing pen to test his SHSH1, you might want to ping him on it.

I don't think you can blue INFI.

I have that exact same blade coming to my place soon ;) (at least it looks the same).

I was told by an unidentified HOG that the apprentice blades (1st gen SHBA apprentice blades, that is) were all A2.

Either way, I'm keeping it, since it was my first "Busse"...
INFI won't take bluing? I thought I had read that somewhere... isn't it still a carbon steel? This knife sat for quite a while and there was never any even surface oxidization (I wouldn't call it rust), whereas some of my INFI has... I must have left a spot of something on it...:grumpy: never anything that didn't easily come off.
I'll have to give it a try, thanks.

Like I said, I don't know Jack......well maybe Satin Jack, but I know I don't know Jack Cheeit, ;)

It's all good....you know Paul (even though he doesn't really know anything either) and he knows how to find the people who know...uh....things...
