This is the first knife from one of my apprentices, Steve Murray. After three days in the shop it is all done. After the first day I am surprized he came back. He had me on one side of him and Trace Rinaldi on the other. With both of us looking over his shoulder as he ground. Would have diven me nuts:D.

He decided to go with one of my large fighter patterns. Which is a challenge for a first blade. He chose ATS-34 and had it treated by Paul Bos. The handles are green canvas Micarta with red liners. It has a satin finish and tapered tang. It is 14.5" OAL with a 9" blade. It also has a false edge running two thirds the lengh of the blade.

Trace and I were ready to kick him out of the shop after his first five minutes on the grinder. He was making us look bad. He was grinding as well as we did, and he did it right out of the gate:o.

Stellar students are always the product of great teachers. What a wonderful experience Mr. Murray must have had.

Wish I lived in southern Cal.

(Whoops... did I say that?)

Looks good. I don't think that it could possibly look too good, but that is beyond impressive for a first knife. You must be a very good teacher.

That damn guy picked up grinding, like a hooker picks up STD's... I KNOW I would not have performed like that with 2 knife makers hovering over me, on the FIRST blade I ever ground!!..
Steve has the intestinal fortitude though, I guess it was all those years as a Cop...
Good thing he is financially secure and doesnt want to be a knife maker for profit or we would have to do something about him...HA!!!
Great guy, and a hell of a natural grinder...
You done real good with him Ron:-)

Take Care

R.W. and Trace,

Judging by the looks of that knife and the results of the poll I'd say that apprentice had better get to packing.;) :D

That is some pretty awesome work, you might want to run him out of town:)

what are the specs?

Anyone know a maker in central Arkansas that needs an apprentice
or just someone who will let me have some shop time?

btw
outstanding knife!!

Man, I want to be somebody's apprentice! When I get home I'll be working on #24, and only met one other knife maker! Damn good thing for this forum, next best thing to being there. :D

Steve, you kick A**, good luck in your knife making and congratulations in chosing a difficult pattern first time out! RW and Trace are grinning big time, we all know it...! :D

Nah...just kidding. Wow...that looks great. With two fantastic teachers how could the guy go wrong though?

Anyone wanna buy some used Ron Clark blades? ;)

Just Kidding!

As someone who is also in the process of learning knifemaking I know that Steve Murray will be an awesome knifemaker, sorry IS an awesome knifemaker. He is obviously someone who looks a challenge square in the eye, then kicks it square in the nuts. That knife kicks much butt. For a first knife, that knife kicks waaaayyyyy too much butt!

--Steve, I hate you. You really just screwed up the curve for the rest of the class. Carnsarn fruggalbaffin, nafferl starfelfarvin brackerfratten nittin grittin over-achievers, sheesh! ;)

Seriously though, I suspect we will be seeing great things from this knifemaking "prodigy".

I figured it out. Steve Murray is his NEW name. His old name was Tom Mayo. Fess up R.W.!:D :D :D

Looks great to me...especially considering its his first knife.
I've tried flat grinding so many times, and still havent got it yet...working on it,though.
Keep up the good work,fellas.
