Good morning everyone.
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli in the First World War.
Early on the morning of April 25th, 1915 Allied Forces began the landing of tens of thousands of men on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey as they started the second phase of the campaign to attack the Ottoman Empire of which a very large contingent were the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps otherwise known as the ANZACs.
What followed was an 8 month long war of attrition that cost the lives of nearly countless men on both sides. All told over a half a million men on both sides were either killed or wounded.
The conditions suffered by the soldiers were horrendous as the battle was fought primarily in trenches. There were numerous instances of bravery that have been recognized however in my eyes any man who fought there was considered brave.
This day is considered a sacred day in Australias history and we mark this with very special dawn services of remembrance country wide. I would just like to say to all my Australian, New Zealand, British and French compatriates who can't make it to one of these services to take a few moments today to remember what happened there and the sacrifice that our men made for our countries. I love my country and I will never forget our sacrifice.
LEST WE FORGET
