I'm working on it, the last couple of weeks, have been, um, er, time consuming.

And Ethan's had guests the last few days, I didn't want to disturb him.

Not to worry, April will bring a challenge.

Maybe April/May challenge... Give you guys time to come up with it, and us time to do it!

Can it be Urban-Friendly this time? :( I miss not being able to participate...

I'll see what I can do, but honestly, most of our contests are urban/woodland interchangable. You just have to apply the thought noodle to figure it out.

As with all of our challenges, the skills are what they are, but its the thought process that we want to bring to light. Thinking is the most valuable tool to have in a tough spot, skills and tools are a mere secondary.

I've seen a guy make a bow drill kit, and a fire, with nothing but a broken beer bottle. Saw another guy, build and entire campsite, with nothing but a bent hacksaw blade.

I have no problem doing urban skills, but they are just basically the same thing in the woods.

I... Never thought about that kind of stuff... When I see challenges like "make a snow dug out" and stuff, I don't necessarily think about doing it in the city cause well... I have my loft, it isn't something that I would need to do in the town.

True enough. Some folks didn't even have snow, me being one of them. :D

But stuff like make a hammock, or weapons, that stuff can be done in the urban jungle as well.

City dwellin' has its own risks and rewards, and I'll tell you someone that does as much work on urban skills, as much as he does woodland skills, is Mistwalker. Mist has an interesting past, but his threads on urban skills are truly worth looking up.

As he's a friend, I have much respect for him and what he does, and he's pointed out something I would have never thought of, unless I was shown.

Think about it like this, if there was no power, no fast food, no police, and no rescue personnel, what resources do you have at your disposal, and what could you do with them?

In a truly bad situation, you will have large groups of scared, cold, hungry, and confused people surrounding you. Do you join them? Or hide from them? Do you plan an evac route? Hunker down? If you have to move, are you prepared to go light and lean, or try to load up your car and make it out on the jammed freeway?

Having seen some major issues in large cities, the most dangerous thing, is the people.

Urban survival will be harder then rural IMO. The concrete jungle is the scariest jungle of all.

I had routes planned when I lived in San Diego...scouted a couple lakes in the mountains, had plans for an egress WITHOUT using any major roads, and some routes didnt call for roads at all. If u take a map, and do some ''urban scouting'' applying the same principles you would use in deer scouting (ie looking for unused paths and alternate trails) You can maneuver without hitting the PARKING LOT that will be a city freeway if SHTF. I have seen the freeways at a clogged standstill for HOURS because of a simple wreck or a sporting event's traffic...the havoc after a major ''bad event'' will be pure chaos. Amazing where u can go in a vehicle that isn't a ''road''. parks, yards, alleys, drainage ditches, canals....the list goes on. If I had the money and had to live in a city again, a dirt-bike would be a valuable part of my E&E Plan

Do they frown on going to a park there and cutting, securing, building a sweet mace and then smacking something with it in Illinois??? I mean come on.... :D I don't know if I could live there!

In gilbert az you can get a ticket if you chop down a tree in your front yard without permit. And its even worse I live in an hoa neighborhood

Wow, What ever hapened to personal property laws? If I want to make a lean to out of sticks and branches to teach my kids some survival skills, I will and they can bite me!

You gotta remember Brain, trees aren't abundant in alot of areas like ours. Cutting them down is a major no no. Besides, if you was good, you wouldn't have to gren cut to get your supplies.
