Merry Christmas yall!

So I am the new owner of an AR15 as of this morning. It is a PSA 15 with a standard A2 sight and delta ring hand guard set up. My first order of business on this is to install a new hand guard.

I prefer the free float systems, mainly for aesthetic reasons. My current plan is to cut down the A2 gas block to make it low profile and then go through the whole process of changing hand guards. However, I'm not set up very well for gun smithing and would prefer to not purchase the wrench and vise kit required for the barrel nut removal. If I have read correctly, all I would need to do to install a FF is to cut the A2 sight and cut off the delta ring if the FF uses the standard barrel nut. I know that some manufacturers like Midwest and DD use standard barrel nuts, but they are all north of $200.

Since I don't need outstanding quality, are there any companies that use standard nuts at a lower price point? Dropping that kind of cash on a rail system seems a little much to me right now.

THanks!

Just recently I bought a new PSA AR pistol. It came with a Magpul handguard and no front sight, the Magpul handguard didn’t provide a way to add one either.

I ended up buying a drop in UTG Pro M-LOK handguard on sale from Opticas Planet. It is a very short rail to fit the pistol, about 8” but it only cost $75 shipped.

I was in the same spot as you, I had decided pretty quickly to just add a free float handguard but this saved me the time, money and effort.

I am very impressed with this rail. It’s made in the USA and is very solid once installed. It took a total of about 15 minutes to install and I didn’t have to worry about changing a barrel nut or any of that BS. Plus it looks great.

Might be worth a look.

I usually use RRA (Rock River) free float kits on rifles I build cause they're fair priced but I don't remember specifically about the barrel nut like your asking.

Alright so I was looking at Samson's website when I found the 556 Tactical Evo series. They are Samson rails that were designed by 556 Tactical as some sort of collaboration. But more importantly, they were on sale. So I just picked up a 15" Samson for $135, no wrenches required.

Not to discourage you in any way but why not run a couple of cases of ammo thru the AR first and see if it lives up to your expectations? It would blo to find out you spent time and $ on a FF rail and the AR only holds minute of barn side. In the meantime, do some research, shop around for prices on new and used FF rails, these get swapped out all the time. You may be able to get a top tier rail for close to the cost of a chicom knockoff if you're not in a hurry. Take it from someone who has a foot locker full of "extra" parts. BTW, I finally settled on BCM Alpha rails.

I would recommend not chopping down the gas block on your own if you are not setup for gunsmthing. You are just going to end up ruining a New upper and costing yourself more money in the long run.

I would shoot it the way it is now and slowly purchase the parts you want. Once you have everything you can send it to a competent smith. I highly recommend ADCO, they have a solid reputantion and fast turnaround.

Also look into ALG Defense rails, they are economical and good quality.
