I'm starting to get a list for building an AR. I have settled on 6.8spc, AeroPrecision matched lower/upper. I'm finding it difficult to find a barrel, I'm looking for a free float forearm, 20" heavy contour and no threading. The gun will be used for hunting out to 300+ yards. No cqb, or carbine, zombie slayer stuff.

Who makes good accurate barrels? Don't want to buy a complete upper either.

AR Performance has good melonited 6.8 barrels, also take a look at their reinforced bolthead for the 6.8. White Oak Armament also makes really nice stainless match grade 6.8 barrels if you like stainless.

Thanks for that, this is my first AR build and aside from top makers, the barrels are all made (sold by, really) by companies I haven't heard of in my various bolt gun builds.

X, Do you remember Catfish ( from Stockton Cycles)? He has built a couple AR's . He might be able to give some solid advice. He is working at the Gun Exchange now. So, it is only a quick stumble from your house and there is at least two bars on the way to keep ya warm on the journey. :D

Yeah, I talk to him all the time, but he's building .223 carbines and is talking about his next one being old school A2 set up. Last I spoke with him he didn't know a whole bunch about 6.8.

You may want to look up the 6.8 forum, lots of interesting info there as well.

So, on the barrel I think I have settled on Bison Armory 20" SS with target crown.

I do have another question. I bought factory blemished upper and lower, the lower just has a light strike for the stamp, no biggie. But the upper has a bubble or possibly a foul cut from machining in the upper bolt race way right in the middle of the ejection port. It is not raised or peaned, just a depression. To me it doesn't look to be a functionality issue, but wondering if anyone who has built these before or has lots of experience with them sees any issue with it at all.

This picture is looking from the bottom of the upper and through the ejection port...

Should I have any concern over this? Or is this just going to be an issue when cleaning due to dirt collecting in there?

Ok, well in my total newb position with AR'S I have now realized that this is supposed to be there, for the dust cover latch. The only other AR's I have handled don't have dust covers and therefore no dimple.

Once I get my lower back from quarantine I will post along the build.
