AR: Can I borrow your hands?

These probably seem like obsessive, picky little questions. Heck, they probably are. Regardless:

I was wondering if someone holding an AR could answer a couple of questions for me.

A) When you close the knife, what hits your finger -- the choil, like on a Spyderco, or the blade, like on an Emerson?

B) The serrations -- or scallops, even -- on the blade and handle. How aggressive are they? I'e never seen serrations that deep before, and I can't find a picture of the spine of the blade -- so I don't know if they'd be too aggressive.

C) Likewise, the G-10 handles -- one of the major complaints (note I said "the," not "my") about the Buck/Strider is that the G-10 is finished too roughly. Personally I don't care either way, but I'd like to know -- is the finish about the same?

Thanks for the help, in advance. Picky little who-the-heck-cares-about-these-details details help me decide this stuff.

James, You and I seem to be up late at night...

answers: I have the GB, but mechanically, same as the AR:

A: This knife is VERY easy to open one handed, the action is as smooth as a French hooker's powdered ass... I am not sure what you mean by it hitting your finger. This knife is definitely designed not to close until you are damn well ready for it to do so. It would be fairly difficult to close with one hand. In this sense, It will not hit your finger. (trust me, this knife is not going to "accidentally" close up. If, in the EXTREMELY unlikely event that it did, your forefinger would merely be piched a little by the choil.

B: The "Scallops" (I don't know a better word for them either) are great. They are VERY aggressive. You get great grip with your thumb in a sber grip, and if you look at a picture (another difference between the Buck version and the original) you'll see that the deep serrations are also on the back of the spine of the handle, where it angles down toward the bottom. This makes it great for backhand (stabbing) grip.

C: The G-10 grips are comfortable. They are definitely "grips" however. The texture is rough enough to get a good handle on it, but also very comfortable.

Good luck on your trades for the Bucks and others. I was going to respond, but I am not sure there is anything that I want to trade that would have too much trade value other than the Stiders I now own, and these two are going to stay with me 'til In give them to my son someday....

That's what I was asking. If you one-hand close a linerlock, there's a tendency for the blade to bite your finger if you don't move it fast enough -- never happened to me, but I like knowing that it won't.

Okay. The grips on the B/S seem a little too unfinished -- makes the knife feel cheap. It's nothing vital, but again, I like knowing.

That's enough of an endorsement for me. I'm still a bit worried that nine ounces is a bit much for a pocket knife, but what the heck... I've tried most all of the other bombproof folders, might as well give it a shot.

Now I get to try and get ahold of one. That's the fun part.

Thanks for all your help,
James

i had a GB (traded it) and to me it seemed very light for its size, im guessing this would be because of the skeletonized handle, or maybe its just me:) but either way, its not THAT much differnt from the large B/S and the handles on my GB were WAAAY more comfortable than on the B/S

THE AR AND GB FINISH IS ALOT SMOOTHER BUT WITH A LITTLE SAND PAPER YOU CAN FIX THAT BUCK STRIDER RIGHT UP. WHEN I GOT MY B/S FROM DUANE HE TOLD TO TAKE SOME SAND PAPER TO IT AND IT WORKED OUT GREAT NOT AS SMOOTH AND ROUNDED AS MY AR BUT GOOD ENOUGH FOR GOVERNMENT WORK
