have heard the arcs were cool lites, got one this week, a arc AAA w/1 white LED, is much brighter than i expected, its about(really is the same, any diff is negligible imho) as bright as my inova X5 (not with new batts but w/fairly new batts, not some old almost burned out batts i put in there sometimes) and about 1/3 the size AND uses the cheap std AA batts, amazing the amount of lite they put out. i guess it is probably 3X as expensive as the inova though. am suprised arc went outta biz, if they only could have gotten the price down they would have sold lots more of them i would think.

did arc make any lites comparable in size to the inova X5??

Comparable in size were the Arc4 and Arc LS, at least closer than the Arc AAA and AA.

I think they had problems due to the design of the Arc AAA being too close to the design of the Maglite Solitare. I don't know if that's what did them in at the end, but I'm sure it didn't help things any.

Just to FYI Everybody, the current alternative to the Arc AAA is the Peak Matterhorn. If you can get the prototype body, it's pretty dang close to the Arc AAA. And the production body is just a smidgen bigger.

ARC went out of business? I guess now I'll never get my AAA repaired. :(

If you search over on Candle Power Forums you can find all kinds of guys who do mods. on the Arc's and can probably repair yours.

Snow, check out the Arc forum on CPF. There is a lengthy thread about maintaining the Arc AAA, maybe you can fix yours yourself..

Ok I'll check that out. Sadly, I think I may just have a lemon. This particular light has stopped working 3 times. The first 2 times I sent it in for repairs, and the last time I got pissed off and spent $5 for a Dorcy light that works flawlessly. Makes me rethink why I spent $20 on that light in the first place.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see what they have to say about it.

I think you have a bad X5 or nearly dead bats in it; my x5 was as bright as the early ARc 1 watt.

If you want a treat get the Peak 3 LED AAA hi-power with snow led's. Of course it will set you back some $$.

Dave I haven't tried the 3 LED AAA, so maybe I will give PEAK one more try.

That said...

Do not buy a peak expecting ARC quality or output.

The AAA Hi Power Matterhorn 1 LED Snow I bought, I had to send back for major flickering problems, the 3 LED 1 N High Power Shasta I got puts out less light out of the box than a dim white photon freedom.

They seem like a very nice company in the 1.0 stages with their LED heads, and the court is out till they return my light on the cutomer service, but I would say hold on to your ARC's right now because there is nothing else better on the market.

RIP ARC ... I should have bought (AND KEPT) 10 of you when I had the chance. :)

not a bad inova/not low batts, its not AS bright, but its so close it is inconsequential imho. i could do anything w/the arc i can w/the inova....

amazing little lite

If you are looking for something that is good quality and cheap, the gerber sonic is the way to go. I got a silver finish one that has very good output and looks sleek.
