I posted this in another forum, but thought maybe someone could answer me here, as I have not yet gotten an answer. The Arc-Lock looks like it is very similar to the axis lock by BM. Is there a difference? And if so, what is it? Thanks!

Ashes,
If you do a search on "Axis Arc lock" you will find a thread or two describing them...
That being said, I have disassembled both. (Shh, don't tell Ron...;) )
While they are certainly similar  there ARE differences. A while back I found a GIF (?) diagram of the Axis lock, that showed how it worked.

1) Both use "Omega-type" springs to center and "activate" the lock.
2) The Benchmade Axis slides straight up-and down (on an axis...) for dis/engagement, whereas the SOG Arc lock travels in an arc (imagine!!!).
3) The BM uses a stright pin which locks against the blade locking it open, until it is pulled back. To get it to fail, you'd have to bend a 1/8" bar of steel. The SOG uses a "tear shaped" piece of steel that has a pin/release (the visible part)through the large end, and a second screw through the small end (liners and handle too) about which it pivots. Thus to get it to fail, you'd have to compress this "tear" of steel.

That is MY understanding, actual mileage may vary...
:D

Thanks, Bobby, for your explanation. I'm sorry I forgot about the search! Forgive me, I'm a newbie...

I ordered some of these today... Well, I put them on my list of things to order tomorrow. I love the axis lock so I'm excited to check this one out. Thanks again for the info.

Which did you order.
Let us know what you think when you get them, I think you'll be impressed.
Good luck,

I meant I ordered the Arc Lock ones... We already have the axis locks. Sure, I'll let you know when they come in.

Krizzard, out.

Wow, I hadn't seen this one. I'll have to see if we can get it.I love trying new locks. :D Thanks for the link, Krizzard.

Krizzard,
I haven't played with one, or even looked at it prior to your post.
My frist reaction is that I am not keen on cutting an extra channel in the blade, I would think it would weaken the knife... Other than that, it seems like a good idea.

Just from handling one and looking at the drawings, it looks to me like Cold Steel's Ultralock is exactly an Axis lock, except the lock bar travels in a slot in the blade instead of on top of the blade. I believe that Cold Steel and Benchmade had, uh, "frank discussions" over this, and that now Cold Steel licenses the axis lock from Benchmade (i.e., everyone realizes it was an axis lock). I am NOT SURE of the accuracy of that last statement, but I've heard it from several sources now.

Thanks Joe, I didn't know that.
As always a fountain of information.
When is the updated FAQ going to be "published"?
