Hi Guys.

I've officially moved over to traditional shooting/hunting with my purchase of an older Bear Black Bear. I'm thinking back quiver, but wanted to hear some recommendations from experienced trad shooters on their preferred quiver styles.

Here's some pics of blackie over at the Bear Swamp Archery complex (which is free for range and hunt course):

Since this forum is now about surviving the zombie apocalypse, I thought it a good idea to practice my headshots :p

And a plug for Normark's Becker Kydex. Here's my Crewman retaliating against an uncooperative hunt course target. If you haven't tried his sheaths, I highly recommend. This one is five years old and going strong:

Thanks for your time,

i have been a trad. archer/hunter for many years now.. both my boys, as well as my wife are also longbow shooters.. :) my father in law is also crack shot with a longbow..
as far as quivers go i think it's a matter of personal preference...for general range/3-d shoots, i use a back quiver that i made...for hunting i have a Selway slide-on bowquiver, attached on my longbow.. there are a lot of different style quivers out there, try and go to a local range or 3-d shoot and see what works for you... www.tradgang.com is a really cool all trad. forum, they have some really cool classifieds.. www.3riversarchery.com is another good source for all thing trad..

Mike is being too modest.

Contact Mike for your quiver! He makes beautiful archery gear.

:DI just love your little man's hat ! He is just too cute...

I'm also a fan of back quivers ...

Here's a pic of my simmons.. It's fully enclosed, as you can see.. I like it because it protects my feathers....

I also have a leather back quiver, but can't remember where I picked that up from... I've alway heard guy gripe about how back quivers are dangerous but I've always felt more comfortable with back quivers then bow quivers...

Best of luck with your choice..

what would be a decent entry level traditional bow? i haven't used one since boy scouts, and i've been wanting to get back into it.

Otis,

I picked up my Black Bear on ebay for $49 bucks. I was the only one to bid

I did some research, and got good auction timing on the Bear. Look at Bear, Ben Pearson, and Browning recurves. Martin Howatt as well. Trad gang, Stickbow, and trad archery have classified forums, and are a great source of information.

Stay relatively light on the draw weight, as you no longer have the mechanical advantage of let-off. A reasonable weight will also facilitate proper form training. I shot a 70 lb compound, but this Bear is 45 lbs.

I'm very glad I started. It has been great fun learning.

brians I have just got back into traditional archery my self. I picked up a Herters fiber glass 35-40 and an AMF made by Wing archery 58 AMO 50# @ 28". I shoot the AMF for the first time today real nice. I also have in the works a leather side quiver once done I will get some pictures up. Mike great stuff as always when you post. Doug

Thanks for the feedback guys. Great pics all around.

I would also like to try a longbow and will be researching, which is also fun for me :)

There are so many quality bow options, both production and custom. The custom bows are analogous to the quality knife makers here - works of form and function, art and tool.

Hey DPK.

If you get the chance, throw up some pics of the Herters and Wing. I'd love to see them.

thanks for all the great comments folks.. i appreciate it..:)

Brians-- there is a nice rover style quiver for sale in the exchange as we speak.. check it out.. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=694926 it was made my good buddy Boomstick.. it is almost exactly like the ones that i make..

That's pretty nice. How does the strap work on that rover style? It's not evident from the pics?

By the way, how long is that shot in the first picture? I've got some practicing to do :)

At the risk of losing a sale of the awesome side quiver mentioned above. I use a Great Nothern bow quiver on my Bear Grizzly. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Brians-- if you look at the pic of my wife shooting, that is how you wear the quiver.. with the fletches behind you... the strap is interchangable to be worn on either side..

that shot in the first pic was a long one, i would say it was probably about 25-30 yards... did you notice my arrow in flight..:) this same shoot that we are at in these pics, set's up a 9 hole archery golf course, which is a lot of fun..:D

Pyre,

That's a nice looking hip quiver. Do you prefer a hip quiver over a back quiver? And if so, why?

B

I like a hip quiver because I do mostly target shooting on a range. Having the arrows at my side help me maintain a better form without having to reach back every time to draw an arrow. However, if you're going to do a lot of moving around like you would while doing a 3D target course or while hunting a hip quiver is a pain in the butt because it makes a lot of noise and hooks up on brush n stuff.

I didn't notice the arrow - pretty cool. The shot looks much longer than 30 yards.

I understand about the quiver position. It's the strap length adjustment mechanism that is not evident - buckle, tab, etc.
