Ok guy's I think this skill goes right along with this section ...Archery... I use to Love to shoot my bow & when I was a young man growing up I always had a bow (Thanks dad ) But for the last 4 yrs I've been bowless:( & I miss it! I purchased a Hoyt MagnaTech XT2000 from my local archery shop in '04, I only took it hunting 1 time so I sold it to my little bro. (TurkeyGeorge) he still has it & has used it every bow season since. So now he is giving it back to me & is going to purchase himself a newer model (Martin Saber). With the price of ammo & it being hard to find I think Archery is the way to go  What are your thoughts on this & lets see your bows !!!!! Post some pics of your Archery gear please ! I'll post pics of mine when I get it back :)

Totally doin' the archery thing nowadays. Elk hunt in November, WooHoo! First time with a bow and first time hunting in a few years.
Here is my current setup with a bow I won in a jwilliams giveaway.

Getting a new setup (Bear Grizzly and Great Northern quiver) next week to break in along with a new Busse Fusion Battle Mistress. Life is so good!

archery is the way to go! I stopped gun hunting 10 years ago because of the up close personal skill of bowhunting. I shoot a 07 Bowtech alleigance and have always filled all of my tags each year with it. Practice is the key though. All of my treestands are set up for a 20 to 25 yard shot but I practice reguler out to 60 yards to be totally confident in my hunting shots. The last 4 years I have taken more time when I aim at deer and have not had any go over 60 yards after the shot.

I have been in love with archery ever since Boomstick and MtnFolkMike got me into it.

I suppose I should take some better pics of it, but this one is all I have, I took it when I first got it, and of course there's a pic of me shooting it.

there are some gorgeous traditional bows out there. Proud owner of a Howard Hill Big Five, though I don't use it as much as I should (archery range 3 blocks away) I love instinctive archery. I have a Martin Lynx Mag compound and it doesn't see half the use as the Big Five. I like archery because there are what, 3 working components? strapping sights and cams and cables and fancy rests and silencers and all that junk onto a bow completely defeats the purpose of archery over firearms.

I just built a target in my garden from old carpet tiles, some spare bits of planks and a couple of ratchet straps. Hung a couple of dust sheets behind for safety, one of them doubled up to give 3 layers.

My bow is a Samick SKB - with no added extras - in the 50lbs bracket.

Range to the target is only about 12m (35ft) and is for recreation only as hunting with a bow is forbidden in the UK. From my accuracy so far I can see why :)

I'm a Level 2 NAA instructor, but haven't used it in a few years now due to other work. My favorite bow is definitely my Ben Pearson Lord Mercury, though it's a target recurve. I don't hunt yet, but I might someday. :)

Well, since you're replacing it I'll take your handmedowns. You know just to keep it from collecting dust. All joking aside that's a pretty sweet set up so I can't wait to see the pictures of what's replacing it.

Have you ever seen the Archery competitions out there where they ride a real horse and shoot? I went to one and everyone was dressed up as either Mongols or Japanese Samuria (sp?) kind of like a ren fair atmosphere but main attraction was the shooting competition. The horses were trained to run in this track with rails on either side and the shooters had to shoot the targets as they went by. It was a really cool show and an amazing display of archery.

I love shooting archery.. I Really love my Martin x-200 recurve.. and am mostly into traditional shooting... However I just dropped some coin on a pse nova... In hopes of bagging a white tail this year... while I can dot eyes with a sighted compund at 20 yards I don;t feel comfortable enough with my trad skills to conduct an ethical hunt.

tell me how you like the nova so far? Ironically before i even read this thread i went out and looked at my bow and craigslist and found a few novas....:D

Riley,

I didn't know you were into archery. If you are ever out east and want to hit the range give me a shout. There is one in Patchogue that is pretty good. I would love to get a stick bow but don't have the time to become proficient enough.

Have you ever attended any 3d shoots?

Nice shots guys! As an aside, does anybody have any recommendations for a decent recurve/longbow that isn't too costly? I loved shooting bow when I was a kid and teen but haven't done it since. Went bear hunting in Montana with an uncle when I was 14 (he had the bow I had the Marlin .44 backup rifle, but we never even saw a bear. It's on my short list of skills to regain, but I don't have a lot of scratch to put down for new gear. Any recommendations and why would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure what to even look for.

If this is more appropriate as it's own thread, I'll start one. Sorry for the hijack, Coaldigger!

I'm getting a Bear Grizzly. It's a nice recurve for about $330. Some would call it an entry level bow, I call it affordable.;)

Glad to see there are some traditional folks still out there. Getting ready for bow season next weekend.

I haven't shot a bow since I was in Boy Scouts (maybe 20 years ago) but I won an old Wing Presentation I on ebay the other day. Once it comes, I hope to bother you guys with questions (and hopefully photos)

here's my setup, I'm not a traditional archery hunter, but I am a hunter. It's a horton legend 175, I got it from a guy at work, he needed some money and I was there to help.....
