maybe this is good for a sticky?

don't know how persistent this link is:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/search.php?searchid=646683

but advanced search -> threads started by user -> yangdu

makes it really handy to find all those past goodies and fantastic pictures and things to think and drool over.

would be cool to have a static list of that as a stick though, in the proper order and such. makes cataloging easier too :)

I've done that for drooling purposes, but I think stickying it would be inappropriate. Some people might 'travel back in time' and say "well on March 57th, 200X, khukri ABC sold for $50, but now you're selling it for $65! Give me a discount!"

Just my $0.02 on avoiding trouble.

Exactly. All these things are handmade and completely unique in some way... two [18" AK villagers by Sher] might be wildly different in weights, handle material, or K&C. More importantly, they're graded by Yangdu for quality, and she knows... The SoS might be off by a smidge, or a scratch on the back of the leather, or something like that usually results in a deep discount. Even things that don't show in the pix, like a loose fit. Or if it's perfect in every way. All that contributes to the grading/price.

No two, really, are alike. They're loosely categorized by size/style.

That's why, even after you settle on which suits you best, you're still not done. Because you don't have one in antler, or neem... or maybe you do, and not in hill walnut... next thing you know, you're reading khukuri message boards late at night...

This would have been very helpful when I first started looking, mainly because it is the only way for me to tell what was what. People would have posts that said "Here is a pic of my BAS next to my WWII" but I didn't even know which was which. The DOTD pics are great because you get the nice pics and the names of all the different styles.

the main HI website has pictures of the catalogued established styles, and prices anyway, which is useful for knowing various common specs and such. the pictures are great. it just doesn't help you when they have a new wood, or design, or kami mark of the day :)

i was figuring that since the deals of the day are already on BF, and can be found going back "forever", it would just be easier on the BF server, and more convenient to have them in a fixed list by date, with a heading of notes of what blades were, and weights, and so on. i might still do that for my own personal use - there's so much variety. think of it as a master catalog.

well, people sell at prices that people sell at. perhaps they modified the scarbbard, or upgraded the handle, and put hours and hours into reprofiling the edge. i'm aware of "certain other knives" that command huge premiums after the fact, as safe queens, and people pay that. market forces. now, be that as it may, some one can still go back and lookup the original buyer of a given deal of the day anyway, and compare/contrast to the main HI website. the information is out there, i was thinking a master index would add value to the folx collecting and wishing to learn. besides, who would be crazy enough to SELL their HI blades? you sell the lesser blades that cost more to buy more HI ;)

what's "SoS"?

and vampires need kukris too. those zombies are pesky, and the late nite means the internet runs faster :>

"Sword of Shiva" - the carved & brass-filled inlay near the spine of *some* models, like BAS. It's pointy, and may be there for religious reasons, or to add divine power to your striking ability. I'm not an expert.

The SoS is beautiful, no matter what it may or may not do. Like the cho, it adds to what's already exotic and very cool.

Ah yes, but they tend to only show one blade, which makes it difficult to compare them to each other. The DOTD pics are fantastic for deciding which one you want, because you ge tto compare them to each other. I should say they are useful for deciding which one you want first.
