Hi all,
Brand new to forum with a question.
A friend that made a hobby of making Magnificat Knives recently passed.
I inherited a collection of various blades and exotic woods (I think you call them "Skins")
I recently used some Ebony to make grips for my 1911 (handgun) and was very pleased with the results.
I'm about to take on my first knife project and was going to start with 1 of a half dozen Arklite blades.
The blade says Darrel Ralph Design. My google search looks like these blades are used without handles.
Is that right ??
Also what is a "Neck Knife" ?
Sorry for the wordy post, but I need a "jump start" in Knifery
Thanks Ed

A "neck knife" is simply an knife hung around the neck. More precisely, the sheath is hung around the neck and the knife is carried in it point up/handle down. The draw is made by grasping the handle and pulling down towards the navel. They are generally fixed blade knives, that is, I've never seen a folding neck knife but it's a big wide world.

Lots of folks carry a neck knife with a 3-4 inch blade while hiking or other outdoors activities, hanging outside the clothes (Cody Lundein of Dual Survival for example.) Another popular category is as a "hold out" self-defense option worn hidden under the clothes.

what Unistat said.

though I'll add that plenty of people these days make necker sheaths for folding knives.

Welcome Eddie1911! Sorry for your loss, but welcome to the fine hobby of knife collecting and making!

I think you mean "scales", not "skins" for knife handles. Same terminology in knives as for pistols.

As for knives with or without scales, that is a personal preference. Many like their knives thin, so they can be carried lighter and easier to conceal. Some like to make temporary grips out of wrapped parachute cord, this serves a secondary purpose of having cordage handy if ever out in the wilderness. Others, love the feel and beauty of well-made grips on their knives. There is no right answer, so do as you wish. Post a few pictures when you're done.

You may want to check and see if the ArcLites you have are the Camillus version or Darrel Ralph customs. If they say CUDA on the blade I wouldn't hesitate to mod 'em. If, however, they're customs I would be a bit more hesitant as they may be worth a few hundred bucks per knife.

You can choose to put handle scales on them, if you want scales on them, put scales on them. If you like a wrapped or scaleless handle instead, then do it that way.
A neck knife is usually a small fixed blade carried around the neck.
Sometimes it's a folder. I used to carry a Spyderco Dragonfly around my neck.

Well, there you go. This makes me think I should carry my BM Mini-Grip in a neck sheath. I wonder if I can rig it so the blade opens on draw...

Who made that sheath, if you please?

^^ I think you would have to have a wave on your Mini Grip and a place on the kydex where it would catch to wave open.
But, I've had several neck knives and by far my favorite necker had to be the Dragonfly in a Kydex sheath.
