spyderco are my favorite knives!

i guess my question is as straightforward as the title states

are the larger backlock models (example caly 3.5, stretch cf/zdp) mbc rated for their backlocks?

just curious

thanks!

No, they aren't. Most fall into the Heavy Duty, some fall into the Very Heavy Duty/MBC catagory. I don't recall Spyderco releasing any data on lock strengths on individual models in quite some time, so I can't tell you which is which.

The only ones I heard are MBC rated are the chinook series, the manix 2, and the Yojimbo. There are probably more and I am probably wrong on those except for the chinook.

from what i know the ones that are mbc rated are 1)yojimbo 2)gunting 3)chinoook 4)P'Kal

i was just wondering if locks like the caly 3 and paramilitary 2 were as well

Caly3 I seriously doubt is higher than heavy duty. Given the general construction of the knife I would guess Medium Duty. The Para2 may be VHD/MBC rated, but I've never stripped mine down and measured everthing to compare with the Yojimbo.

IIRC, the C95 Manix and the original (backlock) C101 Manix were MBC/Very heavy duty rated as well. How important that rating is would be debatable. Both the Endura and Delica, neither of which is MBC rated, are carried by at least some folks who could carry whatever they chose, Mike Janich among them.

sorry to sound dumb, but what is a/the MBC Rating?

"Martial Blade Craft" as I recall, is what 'MBC' stands for. I don't believe Spyderco uses this rating system anymore. If so I seem to recall it being somewhat evolved and it may even be called something else now or new parameters and standards apply I'm not sure which. Whatever the case the rating is little talked about today.

Steve, IIRC, Martial Blade Craft is a trademark of Mike Janich. Spyderco used the term "MBC rated" while the Yojimbo was in production but changed to Extra Heavy Duty, after it was disco'd and Mike went with another company. Now that Mike's back with Spyderco they may, or may not, decide to use the term again. Personally, I think Extra Heavy Duty is better, as it does not imply the knife is designed as a weapon, but merely that the lock is very strong.
