just wondering if axes are getting more popular to buy either as a collection or to use. I make the rounds to the antique shops and do find some decent stuff. But I leave behind the ones that have been ground down etc. but on follow up trips those are usually gone. Not the over priced, just the abused. the $75 POS will be there forever.

For those who haven't been looking but want to, it is important that you not have your expectations too high. The junk is the majority and not every trip nets something. It help to have other things of interest to be looking at. For example crocks are everywhere I check the prices on those, not especially planning to buy one, just making more of the visit. Also be disciplined. Don't lower your standard because you haven't found anything good yet.

i always look for old axes when i go into town. i can say that they are few and far between around these parts (montana).
i'm always hoping and looking though.
one day soon i will find 'the one'...

I think you are right on the money. The good ones are few and far between. I like restoring axes, but this is probably the hardest part, especially if you are looking for a particular size or design. I keep an eye on ebay, and try to buy when I see a good one. That way if I ever feel like doing a project, I have some sitting around.

Glad to see other people do this also. I thought I might be the only one. I have found a dozen different axes the last couple of years, and as many Plumb hatchets.

I would highly suggest to quit looking and get into something else to collect. Please.

:)

I personally would move to to something else. But I got hooked when I found a pile of rare axes with the labels still on, all dirt cheap in an antique mall in Erie PA. :D

ive always like the idea of an axe. even in games when i was younger id always choose an axe over a sword. ive just recently found this is a popular hobby. i cant wait for the summer when i can go out to all the antiques shops and stuff and have time to actually work on projects.

Here in Germay you can not find so many much guys that collect axes, hatches or something like this. Many of the people here think, that working with an axe is hard and dangerous. I don´t know any collectors. Here they´re real tools. Old axes or night, the most people are getting frightened by looking at an axe.

Perhaps on the other side of atlantic ocean is already another movement noticable.

Kind regards...

I think Bushcraft is becoming more popular. Lots of newbs getting into the back to nature movement because modern life is too f-ed up. Myself, case in point.

I have always had a few axes and mauls,, I just never thought about who or when they were made.. I bought a axe at true value.. My maul was some fiberglass handle thing that just split wood until I bought a hydraulic splitter.. I found this place a few months ago looking at the hawk mods and Now own 13 axes.. What the heck is wrong with me?

I've always had a few. I'd say that axes as a whole haven't seen a huge upswing in popularity, but rather that QUALITY ones have, and that includes old ones. I've noticed how quickly they disappear from the antique stores up my way, too. Real treasures are hard to find. :o

My best finds have been in the corner of someone's old barn with broken handles. Sometimes 4 or 5 at a time.--KV

I walked 2 antique malls yesterday. Overpriced and ruined items is all I saw. But one of these i was in just a week ago, and noticed that a few pieces i had passed over because they were ruined on a grinder had sold. So I'm not the only one looking in my area.

I also noticed one DB axe that has been ruined on a grinder has been there like 90 days at $65 and no takers. Funny how some of those dealers shoot for the sky with total junk.
