Are Bolsters The Same As Thumbstuds?

No, bolsters are sort of like a gaurd, only don't usually stick out as much and cover more of the handle. On a folder, the bolsters would be the metal(brass, nickel silver, SS, Ti etc.)on the handle where the pivot pin is.
 
Ok, stupid question: what is SS? I thought it means double-stainless damascus.
 
SS= Stainless Steel. I think its also used when talking about damascus. I was just being lazy.
