This is prolly a stupid question. But are Busses sharp when you get them or do you have to sharpen them. I have seen some guys on youtube showing you how to sharpen one, I have seen some that shay its hardly sharp. I just saw a bushwacker I thought was coated even on the edge?

I have had Done Heathcoat build me a few knives, and he puts what he calls a hungry edge on his. Its not like a razor but I have been through 17 deer never touching the blade with a stone. Maybe thats how a Busse is?

What say you?

Yes and no. I've had really sharp ones and some extremely dull ones. Either way if your not happy with it you can send it in to get sharpened.

Are Busse knives sharp from the factory?

.....most of the time they are hair popping.....but not always.....I've only received one knife from Busse that was actually dull, and it was a custom shop to boot! ?

Just my 2 cents from experience, for what it's worth....

About two years ago these boards were full of complaints about dull knives. Jerry and company have since made a point of doing a much better job on the edges before shipping. In fact, each knife now comes with a tag, "Sharpened by xxxxx" and they all do great work.

No promises about 17 dear, though.

The newer Busse's that we get have a "Sharpened by:" sticker on them, and we haven't had any sharpness issues. If we did, we would know who did it. We (read: Tim) sharpen the knives here anyway, so it's not a big issue for us.

12 years, hundreds of Busse knives, a bunch of "thats sharp!" and a bunch of "What The heck are they thinking???"

Forty some odd years of collecting knives, I can say the quotes above on every knife maker, only aside from a very few.

No maker is perfect, and no maker can make a knife sharp enough, or they make them too darn sharp, or they can never make them happy. There is no perfect score.

Busse recently corrected an issue, since then I have never received what I would consider a dull knife from them, period. I touched an edge on a recent offering and got a nasty cut, now THAT is sharp. :)

Over 90% of my new Busses have shown up like this.

The other 10% (from mid 2010) were more like the "hungry edge" you described. They would all still cut though, as I learned the hard way with a non-shaving, lightly used v-edged Mojo that bit me through jeans down to the bone with a minimum of impact force. Since then, I do not worry about keeping a shaving edge on my larger users, but do on the EDC sized blades.

Awhile back I bought a new SAR3 from an individual and it was VERY dull and had a very thick edge toward the point. I sent it back to Busse. They made me a new SAR3 and had it in my hands within about a week (I don't remember exactly but it was a fast turnaround). They also gave me a $30.00 credit toward a future purchase for my trouble. The new SAR3 was and is scary sharp.

My most recent Busse is a Basic 10 and any part of the blade will easily shave hair.

I guess the bottom line is if it ain't sharp enough for you Busse will make it right. The best customer service in the business.

The B6 I got last year remains the sharpest production knife I have ever seen/held.

If its by Beef it's shave ready!

My first one from the shop showed up a few weeks back. a BJLE that nearly fell through the plastic and cardboard sheath throught the basement foundation never to be found again. It was sharpened by Beef. :D

I think any old complaints have been put to bed. they are sharp.

I have only owned one, so my sample size is small, but it arrived with an edge that was below average -- it could cut, but not shave arm hair. YMMV.

The SAR3 batch really was the low point of the issue. Mine was dull and unevenly ground. I sent it back, Jerry ground me a new one, and I was given the same $30 credit. Every Busse I have received since then has been very sharp.

Is this on a recent knife? For the most part, since the SAR3 bad times, the edges have been much better. As you have read in this thread, Busse will happily take care of you.

You must be a psychic. :) My one and only Busse was a dull SAR3. Richard J put a nice sharp mirror edge on it for me and I later sold it.

My dad and I both received a boss jack DCBB and they were not (in my opinion) very sharp. They did not pass the paper test. They were both sharpened by the same person. My brother got one 2 months after and it was by beef and was a razor. My recent b10s and nmfbm were by beef and again were sharpened to perfection. So I guess it depends on who sharpens it.

I have a Boss Jack and it was kind of dull and so I sent it back. They were very very kind and said they would re-sharpen...which they did. It's still the least sharp of the 7 Busse's I own but it's slightly sharper than it was. It's not really dull but nowhere near as sharp as a Buck, Spyderco, Bark River, Fallkniven as they come from the factory. Still love it but I wish it was sharper.

Every knife needs to be sharpened at some point. If you do not know how to sharpen, it is a critical skill to learn.

As far as I know I've never had 1 Busse sharpened by Beef. I feel as though I'm missing out.
