Are Butterfly Knives Legal To Carry In New York

Nassau and Suffolk PD will say they are NOT legal, but five NYS judges have stated they are not gravity knives and are therefore legal.......you will most likely be arrested but could escape a conviction for a gravity knife, however add intent to use as a weapon and they become a dangerous knife.....there are a few stores on the Island that sell them and do not seem to be getting in trouble for it.....

here is the link to Levine's NY laws....http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/ny.txt...Nassau does not have any additional restrictions. Levine list one case but there are four other saying the same thing, that since they don't lock open automatically they are not gravity knives. They are designed as weapons ( in most people's opinion) and if you state it is for SD then they clearly become Dangerous knives and would then be illegal....

own? yes. although some sellers will not ship them to NY.

carry is a grey area. i'll be honest and say that -most- officers i work with -do not- know that they are not illegal and will arrest you. you will likely win in court, but the hassle of booking/bail.....

i do my part to dispel the myth, but i'm only one guy. :)

(also, assisted openers are garnering much more attention now that many major chains carry the lower end Kershaws. i've had to explain that A/O's are not autos on several occasions.)

Incidentally, we were talking about a similar subject on another thread. From what I understand, they are illegal all over the US. Then again, it depends on the cop and his mood at the time also. Not everyone looks at them like they are illegal. Its one of our stupid laws.

The best thing to carry in NYC is a sub-4 inch fixed blade that can be totally concealed. You avoid the whole "gravity knife" lunacy.
