Are Commanders falling out of favor?

What's happening? I just sold and Emerson Commander for only 117.50 on Ebay. Was I just unlucky? I lost over $50 on a brand new knife.

Signed...pissed off

PS. I just had to get it off my chest....sorry.

Was there anything special about it? If it was just a plain jane version than that is about what you can get them for these days.

Nope, nothing special, but NIB. Most of what I sell on Ebay I get very close to what I paid for it. But not with this knife.

I just pulled off a Gerber A/F (the 154CM model) because I thought I have another looser. But a Kershaw Boa is ready to go in a few minutes for a $5 profit. It seems the well known brands do the best. The great knives that people are not that familiar with seem to have problems on Ebay. Am I imagining this?

No, your not imagining things.

Try selling a "no name" (not well known maker) custom knife. Expect major loss.

Besides, you should be prepared to lose money anytime you buy something new from a store/dealer.

EKI sells plenty of knives with the 154 it would be cool to go to S30V but the price would go up i'm sure, that they would need to change is debatable imho.

imho if ya are collecting knives with the intent of making money ya are in the wrong game lol, try stocks or futures.

There are some Commanders out there with the S30V blade steel. I have one in a grey-ish blade finish. There are\were a few floating around on Ebay for somewhat high prices.

Hey GUys...

I don't think the commander will ever go out of style...

BTW I picked up my Emerson Commander for $100.00 even about 4 years ago...

Guess I was lucky. I sold mine for over twice what I paid. I thought it was a nice enough knife but I couldn't resist the offer at the time.

Interesting. Seems there are some signs that Emersons are not as desirable as they used to be. I sold mine for a loss and glad to have the money. No complaints, just surprised.

I'll probably start a fire storm with this statement but the wave feature on the Emerson is not something I want to put my life in. Maybe some designs are better (i.e. Endura but haven't tried one) but unless is works 100% of the time, I don't trust it. And that's what I found with the Commander. Most of the time is opened properly but sometimes the blade would not lock. Bad technique? Probably. But I don't want to have to practice for hours. Call me crazy but if I need fast access from a folder, I'll carry my Kershaw Blur in S30V that I reconfigured for tip up carry. Almost as fast but more important, more realiable.

Regards

I saw a few s30v emersons on ebay as well. Going for over twice the price of the normal versions. I would think that if they mass produced thier knives with s30v the price would be much more reasonable though. -They should.
I still love my commander though. For $117.00 someone got a good deal. But, hey, that's what ebays all about.

I doubt that the Commander has fallen out of favor in general as there are still many diehard EKI fans out there that nearly worship the model. However for me personally, I don't think the Commander is constructed well enough to justify the price as compared to some other similary sized tactical-type knives. I'm not sure if others feel the same way, but it's just my own personal opinion.

Probably the bigger reason the Commander didn't sell for the price you wanted is because knives in general tend to not be in such high demand on ebay during the summer months. I don't know if there's a particular reason for that, but I've observed it the last couple of years. I tend to buy more knives in June/July/August for that very reason.

Strangely enough, I ended up selling my CS Recon Scout on eBayfor $7 more than I originally bought it for and it was in great but used condition.

Yeah tell me how they are not desirable anymore when they are always sold out online. Everytime I place an order for a CQC-7 it gets cancelled because they sold out.

One of the reasons people don't buy Commanders on Ebay is because of the rash of chinese copys that have swarmed in. Those chinese copys are almost identical down to the markings. Only way you can tell is with close inspection of the knife where you will find little tidbits that an average joe won't be able to notice.

I still got my 2000 Commander. You know the ones back then when everybody who didn't own one swore you could just stare at them and they would fall apart. Well plenty of Airborne ops, daily carrying and cutting and dropping and it's still there going strong. Only to be replaced by a newer 2006 Commander since that one has achieved sentimental value status.

As far as the wave being unreliable well one word......practice.

E-bay is looked at by most buyers as a place to find a bargain. if you sell there, expect to sell at that level. Are you selling bargain products? When you or I shop e-bay, we look for bargains, and treasures that others don't catch. This is your main market there. There are much better venues for custom and semi-custom knives. Mike

That seems a tad low, but for a while on e-bay people were paying like 160 or 170 for a normal cqc-7 that seemed odd. I sold a TOPS magnum folder for almost 300 on there. People do weird things on e-bay. I don't know what o say either have a reserve or start it at the price you want to sell it at? Then you take the risk of not selling at all!

You never know what a knife will go for on ebay. I watched a new Buck 110 go for over $90.00 because a bidding war got going. The 110 retails for $59.00. Ebay is a crap shoot.

I watch a lot of knives on e-bay. I am also an educated buyer. I know what the retail price is, and what I can get a product for online from dealers. Once an auction gets into a certain range near the price from which I can buy it from a legitimate business, the potential hassles of buying from an individual outweigh the savings. That being said UI have bought all three of my 4 or my Emersons on e-bay. I got a Mach 1 for $43, an Super 7 for $105, a LaGriffe for $45, and a Spec-War for $120.
