What are governmets trying to achieve,by banning/restricting knifes in number of countries arround the globe? Who are they putting into difficult position by doing so: criminals or ordinary decent citizens???

that is not a serious question, is it? Restrictions on ownership of items has never been about crime reduction. Anywhere, at any time.

I cant help but think this may not be the best subforum for that question.

But I certainly am looking forward to hearing peoples' opinions on the topic.

Same as banning guns, only hurts the law abiding citizen.

As am I.

(The OP is not likely to get many responses that differ from his assumed view, however. Even I don't, really, although i would never make a thread like this in the first place.)

Real ballz of steel comes from posting this question on a parenting site or something. :p

I post this accidentally before had a chance to finish.... So

What is your opinion on this?

According to the best of my knowledge any bans and restrictions towards knifes are an absolute and utter nonsense affecting only and only decent citizens-people who have hobbies, people who like to collect knifes, people who are trying to make a living (bladesmiths, knifemakers) -NO CRIMINALS ARE AFFECTED BY ANY OF THOSE BY ANY MEANS....!!!

Why?

Because criminals will always find their way to arm themselfs.... What is the reason behind tough knife law in the country, when criminal will walk into every bargain store and get kitchen knife for 5 or 10 bucks??? Does the knife ban prevent him to kill anybody with this sort of knife??? Or are the governments going to ban the kitchen knifes also??? Is this serious,or how far this will go? Even if all knifes - included kitchen knifes will ever be banned (an example) - what will prevent criminal to buy a screwdriwer as substitute for knife? Are screwdrivers also going to be banned?

I know, this is very discussed topic and i just want to hear opinions on this matter. This was mine point of view.....UTTER NONSENSE

Because disarming ordinary decent people means only one and that is ARMING CRIMINALS AND GIVING THEM ADVANTAGE.

All I will say is, this is a problematic issue. Most of the bans don't affect most of the knives used in crime (ordinary steak or other kitchen knives). At most you only need to be a certain legal age to purchase them.

I do find some laws and areas pretty restrictive as I like to carry longer, more hand-filling knives than some areas allow (big hands, long fingers) and it would be very hard for me to function in a region such as the UK, which generally allows only very small knives under particular circumstances.

Again, there are probably not a ton of people here on this forum who are going to out and out disagree with you on this subject. Know your audience.

One of my students wanted to write an essay on slavery for his persuasive essay assignment. Eventually I gently led him to the realization of why that was impossible.

Well, it makes it easier to pile on charges when a criminal is caught, charges that are normally dropped or reduced by the prosecutor during the plea-bargaining phase.

Most of these laws are proposed by individuals who have no concept of how life is lived outside of major metro areas. Some schmuck in Queens NYC, NY(state senator) just introduced a bill to ban machetes in NYS.
WTF does this individual know of how or what anyone outside his little bubble does with a machete. Some guy attacked another with one and this is his solution. More people are killed with kitchen knives than any other edged item, gonna ban them too. Frustrating topic for sure.

I hope one could still use them in upstate farm areas without fear. Sorry to hear that.

The proposal was state-wide.

My state has it's fair share of stupid knife laws, but it's not as bad as some. Thankfully too, I live in a rural area, and as long as I'm not doing anything stupid or illegal, the Police rarely give a thought to whatever I might be carrying.

I believe the two main reasons that lawmakers pass anti-knife laws are-

1. To give cops and prosecutors more opportunity to arrest and prosecute criminals, and to increase the sentences of criminals once they are convicted. Some crimes committed with a knife in ones pocket will incur more severe penalties than the same crime committed without a knife in ones pocket. The knife doesn't even need to be used by the criminal during the commission of the crime to increase the punishment.

2. To give the citizenry the illusion that they are now safer, and to convince voters that the lawmakers have made them safer, thereby increasing the lawmakers chances for re-election.

To a lesser degree, I believe that lawmakers and governments pass anti-knife laws as a way of further dis-arming the citizenry. Although I don't believe it to be an issue in the US, there might very well be other governments who truly fear their citizenry, armed revolution, and some lone nut who might attack government officials personally, and in their fear they pass any law that they think will increase THEIR safety.

You forgot the third purpose.

3. To generate revenue to fill budget deficits by forcing as many people as possible to pay expensive court costs in clearing their name of any wrongdoing.

Ive never seen any law that stopped a criminal...be it a street thug or a white collar criminal.

Laws remind me of the old saying...locks keep honest people honest. Nothing more nothing less.......

Criminals - by definition - do not follow the law. Only law-abiding folks (again, by definition) follow the rules. There are instances, however, where typically law-abiding folks practice a little "conscientious objection" to arbitrary, unjust, unsafe, or completely ridiculous rules, regulations, ordinances, statutes, etc. But we are not, in reality, hurting anyone - in fact, most of us are ready to protect others, with force, if necessary.

Nutnfancy did a good philosophy vid on Youtube about this topic years ago (I think it was called The Sheepdog Concept" and it's worth a look if you haven't seen it).

Nope. Criminals don't follow laws. By definition, that's why they're criminals.

Edited to add: Whoops, didn't see your post Derek! I guess I was thinking just about the same thing.

This. Some of the criminals will be less likely to carry due to the potential hassle by being caught with a weapon.

Call 'em guns; call 'em knives. Same effect.
Criminals are defined as criminals because they do NOT obey the laws.
Silly to think that they care.
