Some kind of guard can be useful to stop your hand from slipping off the hilt and onto the blade. Nothing to do with "fast", more of a problem with hitting something unexpectedly hard.

No vigorous thrust, just wait for the dogs to hold it down then do a carefully placed heart stab or throat slit, or if you're really sadistic, gut it while its still alive.

I customized my WWII Army Officer's Gunto for that scenario and more. Frankly, I'd let the boar charge me and foot brace it against the ground.

The guard piece was loose so that started a few customizations. I'm not certain all the pieces were together originally.
