Some kind of guard can be useful to stop your hand from slipping off the hilt and onto the blade. Nothing to do with "fast", more of a problem with hitting something unexpectedly hard.
Also good for punching into eyes, throat

Pig hunters are advised to have a guard because if you hit bone with your vigorous thrust your hand may slid forward onto the blade.
