Are engraved khukuri handles common in Nepal?

I have seen some really beautiful work done on khukuri handles. So I was wondering whether this kind of handiwork is common in the Land of Khukuris.

Are there a lot of engraving masters around in Kathmandu, or are they spread all over Nepal?

I know such engravings have been done on horn, silver and wood. Are there any other materials which have been engraved beautifully?

Thanks for pix, Berk. Those are beautiful old khukuris. The bottom one hangs in the Royal Armoury and its pix probably has been seen by more people than any other single khukuri.

Beautiful khukuris, Berk, thanks for the pix. :) I actually like the first one better. Do you own that knife, and if so, what's the chance of getting a model of it made? Of course, I don't have any money right now, so I wouldn't be able to buy one for awhile.:(

Sigh -- I wish. It is owned by a forumite, however - can you guess who?;)

Golok, I never answered your questions. There are master engravers in Nepal and the Newari carvers are world class. People come from all parts of the world to see Newari carvings.

OOOHHHH! Ok, then Mr. Powell, (I presume) what are the chances of a model of this khuk being made? ;) :D It really is incredibly beautiful, anyway. I've always liked the shape of the hanshee style khuks. I'd love to get one from HI, but I think only one has ever been made (the so-called 'Bura Boomerang', which IIRC Berkley DOES own ;) ). Well, if there is never any model of this knife, I do plan to someday make a wood model of a hanshee...when I finally have enough extra money on hand. :)
