Hello everyone,

Was hoping some of you knowledgable people would tell me whether the HI Khukuri's are sheath knives, or swords?

Just wondering because if they are sheath knives I need special permission or a licence to import them into Australia. Customs laws here are pretty harsh, if I order one and it doesn't comply with regulations its 10 years jail or $275,000 fine or both :(

cheers.

I would think that since they come in *scabbards*, they therefore must not be *sheath* knives. The scabbards are leather covered wooden forms.

Some HI knives come as sheath knives, but not the khukuris (typically).

I suppose the authorities don't bother to provide a *legal* definition though, eh?

No they don't :(
Looks like I will need to send some info on Khukuri's to customs and ask for their advice/help.

Thanx for the quick reply Nasty

Sent a big e-mail to customs asking all sorts of questions and definitions. I will post what they tell me and hopefully it will help other Australians to know what they can and can't do.

I know there is a guy on another forum from Australia that collects khuks. Sometimes he posts here too, but I can't remember the username.

Haven't heard about this fine and jail thing. I was under the impression that if a knife that you import is questionable, it will get sent for an inspection. If it passes the inspection, it will be sent to you and if it doesn't, you will be told and the knife impounded. Are you sure about this jail and imprisonment thing?

The stuff I read said you 'could be fined or jailed or both' I'm assuming you would get warnings and such before hand. I don't want to take chances though so thats why I e-mailed customs so they could shed some light on the matter.

Perhaps they're neither sheath knives nor swords, but are actually "agricultural implements?"

What are the restrictions on axes and such?

;)

This isn't the correct answer. The correct answer is to ask the folks at custom like you're planning to, but I fear that their answer may be less than satisfactory.

"Agricultral Hedging tool" is good for evrywhere. ;)

Also " Decorative Hindu religious temple knife" works well for Australia. :D

{must have shipped over 30 to there, non refused yet.They were all antique though. }

"Decorative Stage knife prop" works well for Israel.
